Bruins, Habs, Rangers to target Hossa

According to the Boston Globe, three NHL teams will make a serious move for impending UFA Marian Hossa: The Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers. It's believed that the Pittsburgh Penguins will make attempt to sign the forward, but it's unlikely given the other free agents the Pens have to sign. There have also been rumours that he could be on the list of buyouts that interim GM Cliff Fletcher plans to do this summer. Brochu's take: The Toronto media's love of the "buyout" option for its players is laughable. Buyouts are good options only if the contract is manageable. A trade seems most likely for Blake, however. Source

Brochu's take: Stranger things have happened, but Lalime was carved like a turkey in Ottawa. Will the city welcome him with open arms? Source

The Ottawa Citizen is reporting that defenseman Wade Redden has no intention of accepting a lower offer from the Senators and it looks likely he will be leaving the Canadian capital via free agency. Brochu's take: Lowballing is never good in negotiations. Redden will easily get $6 million from someone this summer. Source

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed forwards Garrett Klotz and Darroll Powe to entry-level contracts. Source

Brunnstrom sweepstakes are over!

It's expected that he will sign a two-year contract, with bonuses that could raise his salary to $2 million a year. Brochu's take: The media and internet have really propelled this average Swedish prospect into an almost mythical player. The fact is he couldn't make it in the World Championship because the coach didn't think he had a good season. Don't be surprised if he becomes nothing more than a depth player for Dallas. Source

Demitra in Vancouver?

In an interview on Team 1040 radio in Vancouver, new Canucks GM Mike Gillis admitted he was aware that Minnesota Wild forward Pavol Demitra was in town and having a look around the city. Gillis did not divulge that he had contact with Demitra. Demitra is now an ex-client of the now ex-agent Gillis. Brochu's take: Expect a whole lot of Gillis' ex-clients to be rumored heading to Vancouver. Demitra might enjoy a new up-tempo system, if the Canucks do indeed change playing styles.

The Canucks also named Laurence Gilman as director of hockey administration.

The Edmonton version of the Metro News is reporting that impending free agent Curtis Glencross is seeking a $2 million contract from the Edmonton Oilers. Brochu's take: Lowe would be stupid to overpay a third-liner like that. If Glencross thinks he can make that much money in the NHL, he's dreaming. Source

The Florida Panthers have re-signed forwards Wade Belak and Kamil Kreps to two-year deals. The Panthers also agreed to terms with defenseman Luke Beaverson on an entry level contract. Brochu's take: Belak's found a home in Florida. Kreps should continue to improve on his stellar season. Source

The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with Finnish free agent goaltender Antti Niemi. For more on Niemi, check my previous post here.

The Calgary Herald reports sources that claim the Flames will re-sign defenseman Mark Giordano to a three-year, one-way contract (worth around $1 million a year) this summer. Giordano signed with Moscow Dynamo this past season because of contract troubles. Source

The latest NHL rumors for May 5, 2008

According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, Calgary Flames forward and impending UFA Kristian Huselius' most likely destinations are the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils. Brochu's take: Huselius will take advantage of a seller's market, as the pool of free agent forwards is quite low. Huselius can easily command a +$5million contract this summer.

The Detroit Red Wings have also let forward prospect Igor Grigorenko know that he will no longer fit into their plans. The Wings don't believe he's fully recovered from his car crash in 2001. Source

During CBC's broadcast of Game 5 of the Montreal Canadiens - Philadelphia Flyers series, Florida Panthers GM Jacques Martin was spotted chatting with ex-Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley. This has fueled rumors of Hartley taking the head coaching job in Florida.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Dale Mitchell to an three-year, entry-level contract.

The latest NHL rumors for May 3, 2008

According to Metro News, the Tampa Bay Lightning will fire coach John Tortorella and he will become the new head coach of the Ottawa Senators. It is also reporting that Doug Wilson, GM of the San Jose Sharks, is the new man atop the wish list of the Toronto Maple Leafs, along with coach Ron Wilson. Brochu's take: Tortorella's future is still in the air as the new ownership group in Tampa has not been officially accepted by the NHL. As for the Wilsons, at least one of them will be let go if the Sharks are eliminated by the Stars. Source

The Toronto Star star is reporting that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Darcy Tucker will be the first player to have his contract bought out by the team once the period for buyouts opens June 15. Brochu's take: A buyout would be another mistake for the Leafs organization. Tucker is a relatively affordable player that can chip in 25-30 goals, a sort of player that can cost $5 million in the free agent market. Source

The Calgary Flames have signed 2007 NHL entry draft first round pick Mikael Backlund to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The Vancouver Canucks are rumored to be hiring ex-Phoenix Coyotes assistant GM Laurence Gilman as their new "capologist".

Edmonton Oilers assistant coach Rob Daum might not return to the University of Alberta to coach with his three-year leave of absence over, but he's not sure if he's coming back to be an Edmonton Oilers assistant coach. His one-year contract has expired and there is no word on what the Oilers will do.
