According to Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell, both Kari Lehtonen and Ondrej Pavelec will be shopped this summer, with one of them most likely to be traded. Brochu's take: Lehtonen hasn't quite lived up to his potential, but I'm pretty sure some NHL teams will give him a chance. Pavelec may need several more years to establish himself. Source
According to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun, several teams have contacted the Detroit Red Wings about trading the rights to forward Marian Hossa. GM Ken Holland doesn't want to trade the rights yet, but admits if a deal cannot be concluded in the next 48 hours, he will consider offers. Brochu's take: It's my guess that Hossa will be shooting for the moon in terms of his contract, so whoever wants his rights should be wary. I'm hearing the Carolina Hurricanes and Islanders are very interested.
LeBrun also adds a rumor that the Montreal Canadiens may sign impending UFA Martin Havlat. Havlat spends his offseason in Montreal. Source
There continues to be speculation that Saku Koivu will sign with the Minnesota Wild so that he can play with his brother Mikko.
It appears the Philadelphia Flyers are willing to let impending UFA goalie Martin Biron go, since they already signed Ray Emery to a contract. It's been rumored that the Colorado Avalanche are interested in signing the netminder.
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun postulates that the Habs will go after Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere as "Plan B", as efforts to pry Vincent Lecavalier from the Tampa Bay Lightning have been futile. Garrioch adds that the Flyers are shopping forward Simon Gagne. Brochu's take: Briere's contract is essentially untradeable, and he has a no trade clause and made it pretty clear he doesn't want to play in Montreal, despite Garrioch's assertions. As for Gagne, his contract is pretty cheap, and I would imagine many teams will be lining up to get him. Source

NHL and Hockey Rumors for June 7, 2009
Here are some of the latest rumors from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal:
Agent Bryon Baltimore wouldn't be surprised if Jay Bouwmeester's negotiating rights were dealt to one of four NHL teams, the Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens and the Vancouver Canucks. Brochu's take: I think the possibility of this happening is quite high, as Bouwmeester is 99.9% certain NOT to re-sign with Florida.
Matheson adds that if Philly wants to sign Bouwmeester, they would most likely have to shed salary by trading forward Daniel Briere. Los Angeles could be a possibility, while the Canadiens remain in the hunt. Brochu's take: Perhaps Matheson forgot about Briere's no-movement clause, or the fact that he doesn't want to play in Montreal.
The Minnesota Wild have "targeted" four teams as possible trade destinations for impending RFA goalie Josh Harding. The Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers are all looking for goaltending. Brochu's take: Inter-divisional trades are rare, but the Red Wings are definitely a team that is interested.
There is talk that the Boston Bruins will send RFA forward Phil Kessel to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for the third overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Brochu's take: Value-wise, I think the Bruins will have give a little more than that. Probably another 2nd rounder should do it.
Matheson believes that the San Jose Sharks will move Patrick Marleau, possibly to the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs need a no.1 centre, but Matheson believes he would be better in a secondary role.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for May 18, 2009
Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post is reporting a rumor that the Philadelphia Flyers would trade either Daniel Briere or Joffrey Lupul and a top prospect (either James van Riemdyk, Luca Sbisa or a 2009 1st round pick) to the Montreal Canadiens for goalie Carey Price and the rights to impending UFA defenseman Mike Komisarek. Another rumour has the Flyers sending a package to the Vancouver Canucks for goalie Roberto Luongo and the rights to Mattias Ohlund. Gormley also adds the Canucks are interested in acquiring forward Jeff Carter. Brochu's take: First, this is completely ludicrous, but since it's quiet in the NHL rumor mill, I might as well have a stab at analyzing it. Briere has a no movement clause, and if he really wanted to be in Montreal, he could have signed there a few years ago. The rights to Mike Komisarek is only worth a 2nd rounder, so this trade would signicantly benefit Montreal. As for Luongo, he's not getting traded, despite all the made-up media speculation coming from Vancouver. Source

League sources say the Tampa Bay Lightning have been shopping Lecavalier because his no-movement clause doesn't kick in until July 1 and that there's also a disagreement between co-owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie on what direction the club should take with its superstar. It appears that Koules wants Lecavalier to stay, while Barrie is telling GM Brian Lawton to see what he can get in return. Brochu's take: Al Strachan on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada intermission program "The Hotstove" also added that the deal seems to be stalling because the Montreal Canadiens don't want to give up defenseman Andrei Markov. Pierre Lebrun also stated that Montreal would be Vinny's top destination IF he was asked to provide a list of teams he would like to be traded to. Adds more fuel to the fire.

Garrioch suggests that the Flyers will move defenseman Randy Jones or forward Joffrey Lupul in order to make room for Briere. Brochu's take: Joffrey and Jones have been in the rumor mill for months now. But the Flyers will be forced to make a roster move once Briere is healthy.
"There's a lot of talk the [Edmonton] Oilers will move [forward] Erik Cole if he doesn't agree to a contract extension before the trade deadline." Brochu's take: Not if the Oilers are still in the playoff hunt.
"The Bolts are expected to send forward Adam Hall back to the [Pittsburgh] Penguins for a draft pick." Brochu's take: Very likely to happen.
The Phoenix Coyotes may hold a firesale at the trade deadline, with the likes of defensemen Ed Jovanovski and Derek Morris, and forward Olli Jokinen being offered up as the club tries to shed salary. Brochu's take: Garrioch and his "league" sources again. I don't expect a firesale until the summer though.
Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini confirmed that newly acquired goalie Dany Sabourin will not play for the Oilers, and will try to trade him or send him to the minors in the next week.
The New York Islanders are still looking for a goaltender after Wade Dubielewicz was claimed off waivers by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Rumour is that they are looking at Vancouver Canucks goalie Curtis Sanford, who cleared waivers earlier this week.

Jackets eyeing Marleau, Briere, Elias, Gomez?
The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that there is "rampant speculation" that the Columbus Blue Jackets will make a draft day run for San Jose Sharks centre Patrick Marleau. The Jackets could also be looking at the availability of Philadelphia Flyers centre Daniel Briere, New Jersey Devils forward Patrick Elias and New York Rangers centre Scott Gomez. The Blue Jackets need a no. 1 centre, as well as a no. 2 centre, and are willing to spend $15 to $20 million this off-season. Source
