The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed Daniel and Henrik Sedin to 5-year, $30.5 million contracts. Brochu's take: Not a bad deal at all. For comparable scorers, it's quite a bargain.
Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Mattias Ohlund to a seven-year contract worth $24.5 million. Brochu's take: It's front loaded, so he will earn significantly less in the later years.

The Montreal Canadiens acquired centre Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defencemen Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko.
The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a 5-year contract worth $6.68 million per year. Brochu's take: So the Flames essentially got Bouwmeester for a third rounder. Great move by GM Darryl Sutter, who managed to sign the blueliner at slightly less than market value.
The New York Islanders have traded forward Ben Walter and future considerations to the New Jersey Devils for the rights to forward Tony Romano.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for June 10, 2009
Forward Dany Heatley has asked the Ottawa Senators for a trade. Heatley, who still has 5 years at $7.5 million a year left on his contract extension, let the team know of his intentions last week. GM Bryan Murray is aware of the request, but expects Heatley to honour the contract. There's speculation that the 28 year old would like to play in the Western Conference. Brochu's take: I will have a full breakdown of Heatley and possible destinations tomorrow. Source
According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, the New York Rangers have made forward Scott Gomez available. The Los Angeles Kings could be in the running. Brochu's take: I'm thinking the Edmonton Oilers would be interested, especially with old coach Tom Renney behind the bench. And Edmonton is a lot closer to Alaska than New York. Source
LeBrun also states that the Kings are interested in Colorado Avalanche forward Ryan Smyth, who is also being shopped.
Brent Sutter has officially stepped down as coach of the New Jersey Devils, citing a homesickness for his family and WHL team, the Red Deer Rebels. Speculation continues to swirl that he will join his older brother Darryl in Calgary, but Sutter is non-committal to the idea. Brochu's take: Sutter will be signing a contract with the Flames in 3.....2.....1....
Judge Redfield T. Baum said during the bankruptcy court hearing Tuesday that he believes the NHL has a right to demand payment for its territorial rights in Hamilton. The relocation fee could possibly reach $100 million, but the exact amount could be decided in mediation. Source
The Atlanta Thrashers have signed forward Andrew Kozek to an entry-level contract. Kozek was the Thrashers' 2nd round choice in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
The Thrashers also re-signed defenseman Anssi Salmela to a multi-year contract extension.
The New York Rangers have signed forward Chris Doyle to a three-year, entry-level contract. Doyle was the Rangers's 5th round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for Feb 24, 2009
According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Blue Jackets are interested in Buffalo Sabres forward Tim Connolly. The Sabres are willing to trade the forward, because he is due to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, and it's unlikely that they will re-sign the injury troubled centre. Brochu's take: Connolly would be a good fit in Columbus, as they are still looking for a centre for their top two lines.
Pittsburgh Penguins scouts have been following the Blue Jackets closely lately. Also, Jackets scouts have been attending several Tampa Bay Lightning games. The most rumored names being tossed around are defenseman Rostislav Klesla and forward Jeff Halpern. Source
According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, there is a "very good chance" that the Anaheim Ducks will trade Chris Pronger at some point. Teams such as the Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames and several other teams are monitoring the situation closely. McKenzie also believes that the Ducks could shop Chris Kunitz to get some salary cap space in the summer. Brochu's take: All those teams McKenzie mentions have some serious cap issues IF they want to bring Pronger in. And something tells me Pronger doesn't want to go back to Alberta. Source

The NHL is investigating and while there has been much discussion between all involved parties, it's not out of the question that the Lightning will file formal tampering charges against the Rangers. Brochu's take: I think this has to do with Bolts assistant coach Mike Sullivan, who HAD a clause in his contract that stated he could leave the team to join Tortorella. I'm sure this will be settled privately unless Tampa plays hardball.
Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail is reporting that the Calgary Flames have a keen interest in re-acquiring Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris. Brochu's take: GM Don Maloney has let the league know that Morris is available, and the Flames desperately need re-inforcements. I would think a 3rd round pick would do the trick. Source

NHL and Hockey Rumors for Dec 13, 2008
Bob McKenzie of TSN was on Team 1040 radio in Vancouver on Friday and stated that there was a rumor that the New York Rangers would send forward Scott Gomez to the Vancouver Canucks to make room for Mats Sundin. McKenzie added that the rumour was around in the summer, but has recently percolated around the NHL. Brochu's take: We shall see. The Rangers definitely have to make soom salary cap space if they want to fit in the Swedish centre.The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed defenseman Mike Lundin on waivers.
The New Jersey Devils have placed forward Petr Vrana on waivers. Brochu's take: I expect Vrana to be picked up. He was one of the Devils best prospects last year.
The Washington Capitals signed goaltender Brett Leonhardt to a one-day amateur tryout contract on Friday. Jose Theodore suffered a hip flexor injury during the Capitals' morning skate, and Simeon Varlamov was recalled from Hershey, the team's AHL affiliate, to back up starter Brent Johnson. However, Varlamov was in San Antonio, and would arrive sometime during the game on Friday. Leonhardt is a Capitals website editor, and actually played goalie for Division III college team Neumann College. Brochu's take: These are great stories. Leonhardt was relieved by Varlamov at the start of the second period. Source

Slovakian forward and former NHLer Ladislav Nagy is not having a good season in the KHL, and may be looking to return to North America next season. Nagy has 3 goals in 28 games with Severstal Cherepovets. The Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders expressed some interest in the forward last summer. Brochu's take: Some players are finding out the hard way that the KHL isn't what it's hyped up to be. Expect Nagy to sign with an NHL team next season. Source

Jackets eyeing Marleau, Briere, Elias, Gomez?
The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that there is "rampant speculation" that the Columbus Blue Jackets will make a draft day run for San Jose Sharks centre Patrick Marleau. The Jackets could also be looking at the availability of Philadelphia Flyers centre Daniel Briere, New Jersey Devils forward Patrick Elias and New York Rangers centre Scott Gomez. The Blue Jackets need a no. 1 centre, as well as a no. 2 centre, and are willing to spend $15 to $20 million this off-season. Source
The same paper is speculating that Calgary Flames centre Matthew Lombardi could be traded to the Blue Jackets in the offseason.
