Pitkanen traded for Cole, more signings
The Edmonton Oilers have traded restricted free agent Joni Pitkanen to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Erik Cole. Brochu's take: This is one of those rare trades that have been rumored for quite some time and has actually taken place. Pitkanen gets a third chance to prove himself while Cole should take Torres' place on the top six of the Oilers' forwards.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired the negotiating rights to forward Brian Rolston from the Minnesota Wild for a conditional pick in the 2009 or 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The pick will depend on if Tampa can re-sign Rolston to a contract.

Rumors from the NHL Entry draft
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Carolina Hurricanes are very interested in Vancouver Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa and may be willing to dangle Erik Cole, Justin Williams or Tuomo Ruutu to get him. They still remain interested in Edmonton Oilers defenseman Joni Pitkanen.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, three teams could be heavily involved in trade discussions this week. The Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and San Jose Sharks are poised to make significant changes to their team as the NHL Entry draft approaches this Friday. Source
Apparently, there were rumors that Patrick Marleau was about to be sent to the Vancouver Canucks in a package that would include Ryan Kesler. Jonathan Cheechoo is also available.

The Edmonton Journal is reporting that the New York Rangers could be interested in restricted free agent Joni Pitkanen. Jim Matheson also suggests that the Carolina Hurricanes could be a better trade partner if they package Erik Cole and a draft pick. Jagr talks heat up
Scott Burnside of ESPN believes that New York Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr would be better off on another team. Burnside states that the Rangers could use Jagr to get a top defenseman back, or get some young prospects or draft picks, and suggests defensemen Joni Pitkanen, Rob Blake, John-Michael Liles, Dan Boyle and Bryan McCabe might "enjoy a change of scenery." There's also been rumours that the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens could be in the running for the Czech winger.

Leftover NHL rumors from the weekend
There's been a lot of rumors over this weekend; here are some that didn't make the last post:
There's a rumour that the Ottawa Senators would like to trade goaltender Ray Emery to the Chicago Blackhawks for Nikolai Khabibulin.
Another one involves the Sens sending Antoine Vermette and a "high draft choice" to the Atlanta Thrashers for Marian Hossa. Considering some of the Hossa offers flying around, it would take more from the Senators to get Hossa.

Sundin for Kesler, Bourdon, Schneider and a 1st?
Team 1040 radio in Vancouver and TSN is reporting a rumour that the asking price for Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin is Ryan Kesler, Luc Bourdon, Cory Schneider and a 1st round pick in 2008 from the Canucks.
The Ottawa Citizen is reporting that Ottawa Senators coach John Paddock made the four-hour trip to Binghamton from Ottawa after practice on Wednesday to check out the AHL Binghamton Senators in action against the Philadelphia Phantoms. Paddock was there to watch which players would fit on the big club if a roster player was traded. There are rumors that Antoine Vermette, Joe Corvo and Andrej Meszaros could be dealt at the deadline. When asked which players he was looking at, Paddock said: "Any one of the young players. (Alexander) Nikulin and (Ilya) Zubov have each had one game, or a few games up, and Brian Lee, and the goaltenders (Jeff Glass and Brian Elliott). And we know what Lawrence Nycholat can do as a call-up." Source

Canadiens and Thrashers talking?
La Presse is reporting that Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell was spotted at the Montreal Canadiens-New York Rangers game in Montreal on Sunday. Waddell is believed to have met with GM Bob Gainey, and talks were surrounded around Mathieu Dandenault. Michael Ryder's name was also tossed in, as he was a recent healthy scratch. Pitkanen trade bait?
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal wonders if the Edmonton Oilers should shop Joni Pitkanen. Big rumour update

The LA Kings are shopping defenseman Tom Preissing. The Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes are interested. Garrioch also adds that Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli is looking for another blueliner to help out Zdeno Chara. The New York Rangers are also shopping Paul Mara, and Garrioch believes that he would be a good fit in Boston because he is an ex-Bruin.
If the Edmonton Oilers don't re-sign defenseman Joni Pitkanen, there is "strong belief" that he could be moved by the trade deadline.
The Philadelphia Flyers are not happy with Steve Downie and could use him as tradebait.

According to Bob Stauffer of the TEAM 1260 in Edmonton, Shane Doan could be moved in the first 40 games of the season. Stauffer is citing a Phoenix source, and it's believed the Coyotes are interested in Joni Pitkanen, Ethan Moreau and Rob Schremp in exchange. He also mentioned a possible swap between Shawn Horcoff and Marc Savard of the Boston Bruins.
