Hockey and NHL Rumors for Sept 21, 2010

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed goalie Steve Mason to a two-year, $5.8 million contract extension.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have given their GM Ray Shero a five-year extension.

Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province is reporting that as Vancouver Canucks goalie Cory Schneider plays more and more, his trade quotient will rise.  Brochu's take:  Schneider is considered one of the best goalies not yet in the NHL, and he should get increased time in net this season with Luongo's reduced workload.  Source

Pre-draft rumor and trade update

This will be a first for Brochu is Hockey, there will be live updates as soon as trades happen today. The 2008 NHL Entry Draft is set to begin in 30 minutes, so keep refreshing!

The St. Louis Blues have acquired goaltender Chris Mason from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 4th round draft choice in the 2008 Entry Draft.

The Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings have put goalies Ray Emery and Dan Cloutier on waivers, respectively. It's anticipated that if they both clear waivers, than both netminders will be bought out. Source

According to the Toronto Star, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has been offered a multi-year deal to play in Russia worth at least $12.5 million tax free per season, or the equivalent of $15 million per year in the NHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have granted permission to the Montreal Canadiens to speak to Mats Sundin's agent about a possible deal. Rumors are flying that this could be a done deal.

The Predators have also signed goalie Dan Ellis to a two-year, $3.5 million contract.

NHL and hockey rumors for May 26, 2008

The Edmonton Journal is reporting that the New York Rangers could be interested in restricted free agent Joni Pitkanen. Jim Matheson also suggests that the Carolina Hurricanes could be a better trade partner if they package Erik Cole and a draft pick. Brochu's take: The Oilers are going to think hard about trading Pitkanen this summer. As for the Cole thing, any writer can speculate about that. Source

Matheson also reports that the Nashville Predators will try to trade goalie Chris Mason once Dan Ellis has been re-signed.

The Palm Beach Post is reporting that Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Andre Savard will be the new head coach of the Florida Panthers. The same article is also reporting that Tampa Bay Lightning GM Jay Feaster will move to a lesser role at the club, while coach John Tortorella will be fired and Barry Melrose will take over. Source

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Toronto Maple Leafs were denied permission to speak to Joe Nieuwendyk about a position with the Leafs. Nieuwendyk resigned in April, leaving his position with the Panthers as a special assistant to the general manager. Source

The Dallas Stars have agreed to sign coach Dave Tippett to a three-year contract extension.

The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Dick Axelsson and defenseman Logan Pyett to three-year, entry-level contracts.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed forward Evgeny Artyukhin to a two-year deal. He will officially sign on July 1, as he is still considered a restricted free agent.

There's a rumor that Nashville Predators defenseman Janne Niskala could be playing for Russian team Atlant (K. Mytischy) for the 2008-2009 season. Source
