Hockey and NHL Rumors for Sept 9, 2010
The Atlanta Thrashers have signed free agent forward Nigel Dawes to a one-year, $600,000 contract. It is a two-way contract.
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed free agent forward Ryan Potulny to a one-year, two-way contract.
The Nashville Predators have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Cody Franson to a two-year, $1.6 million contract. Brochu's take: The two-year deal for restricted free agents seems to be the norm. Expect other NHL teams to sign their RFAs to two-year deals as well.
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed forward Kirk Maltby to a one-year, two-way contract.
The Wings have also placed defenseman Derek Meech on waivers.

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired defenseman Brian Fahey from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Nigel Williams.
The Avs have also signed 2009 NHL first round pick Matt Duchene to a three-year, entry level contract.
The New Jersey Devils have signed forwards Nathan Perkovich and Patrice Cormier to contracts.

Trade deadline wrap-up, Part 1
Here's part 1 of the NHL Trade Deadline wrap-up:
The Calgary Flames have acquired Olli Jokinen and a third-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft from the the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for forward Matthew Lombardi, forward Brandon Prust and a conditional first round draft pick. The draft pick heading to the Coyotes will either be in the upcoming NHL entry draft or the 2010 draft, at Calgary's option. Brochu's take: The Flames are really making a run for it, and Jokinen should shore up their centre depth. It's a lot to give up for him, but Jokinen does have one more year on his contract.
The Flames also acquired defenseman Jordan Leopold from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Lawrence Nycholat, prospect Ryan Wilson and a 2nd round pick in 2009. Brochu's take: With the injury to Mark Giordano, the Flames needed another defenseman. With Leopold in the fold, he should make a strong defensive core even stronger. Again, it's a big price to pay for a pending UFA.
The Flames also traded goalie Kevin Lalande to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a fourth-round draft pick in 2009.
The Ottawa Senators have traded forward Antoine Vermette to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for goalie Pascal Leclaire and a 2nd-round pick in 2009. Brochu's take: This trade has been rumored for a few days now. If Leclaire can regain his form from a year ago, this could become a steal for the Sens. Vermette should help the centre depth on the BJs, but I really don't see him as a top 6 forward.
The Phoenix Coyotes also traded defenseman Derek Morris to the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Dmitri Kalinin and forwards Nigel Dawes and Petr Prucha. Brochu's take: Don Maloney's role as ex-assistant GM of the Rangers comes into play again. I think the Coyotes get the better deal, as Dawes and Prucha are good young players, while Kalinin provides veteran depth. Morris has been rumored to multiple teams, but his price has been driven up by the lack of quality defenseman available.

Lightning/Hurricanes trade, Avery on waivers
The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded forward Jussi Jokinen to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Wade Brookbank, Josef Melichar and a fourth-round draft pick in 2009. Brochu's take: A pretty even hockey trade. Jokinen earns $1.81 million, while Melichar and Brookbank make a combined $1.475 million. NHL free agent signings for July 16, 2008
Catching up on some backlog, here are the latest NHL free agent signings:
The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed Shawn Horcoff to a 6-year, $33 million contract extension. Brochu's take: That's a lot of money for a 29-year old guy that's reached 70+ points. Even including his intangibles, he's overpaid.
The Oil have also re-signed Zach Stortini to a three-year, $2.1 million contract. They also signed right wing Carl Corazzini on a one-year contract.

Potential Rangers/Blue Jackets blockbuster?
Aaron Portzline reports on his Columbus Blue Jackets blog Puck-rakers that the New York Rangers and Blue Jackets have talked, but nothing is imminent. Portzline also reported that on Dec. 23, when the Blue Jackets played Nashville, Gord Clark – the Rangers’ director of player personnel – watched from high above the rink. The Rangers are said to be interested in right winger David Vyborny and a defenseman, maybe Adam Foote or Rostislav Klesla. The Blue Jackets are said to be interested in right winger Petr Prucha. Larry Brooks of the New York Post is also reporting on this rumor, speculating that other players could be included in an expanded deal. The Rangers would like to get rid of the contracts of defensemen Paul Mara and Marek Malik, but would also have to include someone like forward Nigel Dawes to make up the difference.
