Defenseman Brian Rafalski has come out of retirement and signed a contract with the ECHL Florida Everblades. Brochu's take: Even though he's 40 years old, he has a lot to offer. I expect several NHL teams to be watching him closely.

New York Rangers defenseman Wade Redden has cleared waivers and has been assigned to the AHL team in Hartford. Brochu's take: Redden's agent has been given permission to find a team in Europe for the maligned defenseman. The Ranger's are still on the hook for his salary.
The Washington Capitals have signed forward Matt Hendricks to a one-year, two-way contract.

The Bergen Record is reporting that the Colorado Avalanche are interested in acquiring New Jersey Devils forward Jamie Langenbrunner. It's also believed that several teams are interested in forward David Clarkson. Source Brochu's take: Langenbrunner's leadership would work well with the Avs' youthful lineup.
The New York Islanders have signed forward Nino Niederreiter to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Trevor Parkes to a three-year,entry-level contract.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Andrew Crescenzi to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Pierre McGuire of TSN is reporting that Florida Panthers assistant (acting) GM Randy Sexton has set a price of a 3rd or 4th round pick for the negotiation rights to impending UFA defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. The Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers are the most rumored teams to be involved. Brochu's take: Various sources have indicated that his rights could be traded as early as Friday.
Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail is reporting that Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has targeted several players on different teams as trade possibilities. It's believed that Burke is interested in acquiring defenseman Wade Redden from the New York Rangers and forward Peter Schaefer from the Boston Bruins. It's also believed he has interest in Anaheim Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Giguere has a no trade clause, but Toronto is one of several NHL teams on a list he has provided to Ducks management that he will accept a move to. Source

The following NHL and hockey rumors are from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
"Multiple NHL sources told Sun Media yesterday that Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell has held serious talks with several teams about the possibility of trading forward Ilya Kovalchuk." Garrioch speculates that the Montreal Canadiens have an "obvious interest" in the Russian forward. Brochu's take: If Kovalchuk is traded, Waddell would be fired shortly thereafter. I predict that Kovalchuk will stay, unless some team ridiculously overpays.
"There's a lot of talk the [New York]Rangers are looking to move either defenseman Wade Redden or Michal Rozsival. Both were signed to new deals in the off-season, but Redden, who agreed to a six-year, $39-million deal, has a no-movement clause in his contract, making it more likely that Rozsival would be dealt." Brochu's take: For the record, Redden does NOT have a no-movement clause, but a somewhat limited no trade clause where he has listed three teams he cannot be traded too. Both the hefty contracts of Redden and Rozsival make them essentially untradeable.
"The [Florida]Panthers are trying to move forward Nathan Horton. He is scheduled to make an average of $4 million on a contract that runs through the 2012-13 season, which could make him difficult to trade. Forwards Rostislav Olesz and Brett McLean can be had for a draft pick." Brochu's take: Horton would probably get interest from a lot of teams in the NHL.
"The [Edmonton]Oilers have mild interest in moving defenseman Ladislav Smid. Given a chance, he could fit the bill for the [Ottawa]Senators." Brochu's take: There's been a lot of rumors that the Senators and Oilers are discussing trades, and this should add to the scuttlebutt.
"The [Philadelphia]Flyers are looking to dump salary and might decide to see what they can get for forward Joffrey Lupul." Brochu's take: Lupul's been on the trading block for a few weeks now.

Campbell, Redden, Streit, Rozsival signed
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenceman Brian Campbell to an 8-year, $56.8 million contract. Brochu's take: The fact that Brian Campbell will make more money than Scott Niedermayer or Chris Pronger makes me sick in the stomach.
The New York Rangers have signed defenceman Wade Redden to a six-year, $39 million contract. Brochu's take: No wonder he went to the open market. Redden did not play well enough last season to garner this type of salary. But this is the "silly" season for a reason.
The Rangers also re-signed defenseman Michal Rozsival to a four-year, $20 million contract.
The Rangers also re-signed goalie Steve Valiquette. Terms were not disclosed.
The Rangers also signed forward Patrick Rissmiller to an undisclosed deal.

Hossa offered 7 year, $50 million?
According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Pittsburgh Penguins have offered Marian Hossa a 7 year, $50 million contract, and are waiting for his answer. It's believed the Penguins have made signing Hossa their top offseason priority.

Leino signs with Red Wings
According to a report in the Toronto Star, forward Jason Blake would welcome a trade. The Star asked Blake if he would put up a fuss if he were traded, he said: "Oh no, not at all, if that's the route." There have also been rumours that he could be on the list of buyouts that interim GM Cliff Fletcher plans to do this summer. Brochu's take: The Toronto media's love of the "buyout" option for its players is laughable. Buyouts are good options only if the contract is manageable. A trade seems most likely for Blake, however. The latest NHL rumors
Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting that the New York Rangers are interested in Minnesota Wild forward Brian Rolston and Montreal Canadiens forward Michael Ryder. Brochu's take: The Rangers are probably looking at replacements for Jaromir Jagr, who seems to be on his way out of New York this summer. Ryder would be the logical choice, as Rolston is a centre and the Rangers are deep down the middle with Drury and Gomez. Source
Both Darren Dreger of TSN and Scott Morrison on CBC report that highly-touted Swedish prospect Fabian Brunnstrom is very close to signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks. Source
Jim Matheson believes that the Chicago Blackhawks won't be able to land impending free agent Brian Campbell because Campbell likes it in San Jose with his friend Joe Thornton. Matheson believes that they will try to get Wade Redden or John-Michael Liles. The Carolina Hurricanes have interest in Liles. Hawks to get top dman, forward?
Chicago Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon expects to get approval from chairman Rocky Wirtz to spend what he needs in free agency starting July 1. "We need a top-notch defenseman and a top-notch forward," Tallon said. "I could see (adding) two free agents and two kids. But whatever we do won't be just for next year. Any additions will be for the long term, too." Brochu's take: The crop of top defenseman includes Wade Redden, Brian Campbell and John-Michael Liles. The only real "top-notch" forward is Marian Hossa. The Hawks have a lot of cap room and I expect them to sign one of these players. Source

The Toronto Maple Leafs could possibly buy out forward Darcy Tucker's contract in the summer if Tucker continues to not waive his no trade clause. Tucker has 3 years and $9 million left on his contract, but if the Leafs bought him out it would only be a $1 million cap hit for 6 years.
Tampa Bay Lightning forward Andre Roy, who returned to the team after being sent home to "think", are rumored to be targeted by the Ottawa Senators in the off-season.
The Senators are believed to be negotiating with impending UFA Wade Redden. Apparently, the San Jose Sharks offered him a 3 year, $16.5 million contract extension if he had agreed to waive his no trade clause to got to San Jose.
Garrioch speculates that Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak could get some offer sheets from around the league. Teams that could be in the mix include the Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers.
Garrioch continues that if the Boston Bruins miss the playoffs, they will surely trade Glen Murray. The unloading of Murray's contract could give the Bruins enough money to sign impending UFA Marian Hossa.

Redden refuses to waive NTC
According to TSN, sources are saying that Ottawa Senators defenseman Wade Redden was approached by GM Bryan Murray to waive his no trade clause and Redden refused. This was brought on by interest from the San Jose Sharks. Source
The Windsor Star is quoting "highly-placed league sources" are indicating that LA Kings Rob Blake is headed to the Anaheim Ducks. Source

One source indicated that the Blues’ offer averaged less than $3 million per season. Talks continue, but he may become a good asset at the trade deadline. Source

Another Hawks trade imminent?
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon is not done trading and may make a move as early as Friday. He has made several roster alterations to try to pull his club out of their seven game losing streak. "There's a strong possibility there will be a trade shortly," Tallon said Thursday night. "We're looking to get more of a veteran on the back end to help our kids and somebody who fits into our plans." The Hawks already made a move Thursday and could try to bring in a bigger-named defenseman. "We're looking at our options," Tallon added. "Whether it's a big deal or not, it has to make sense for us. We're building something for the future here." Source

Oilers after Vandermeer, Sharp?
The following rumors come from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal:
Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe was scouting the Chicago Blackhawks-LA Kings game on Wednesday night in Chicago. He was also in Montreal to see the Montreal Canadiens play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
Lowe likes defenseman Jim Vandermeer, a Western kid and one of the league's "best scrappers". He may also be looking at Rene Bourque and Patrick Sharp, who is coveted by many teams.
Raffi Torres and Jarret Stoll remain available at the right price. The Oilers have been receiving calls for the forward pair from several teams.
The Blackhawks did "sniff around" Anaheim Ducks defenceman Mathieu Schneider during the last few weeks, but truth is they're going to save their money and try to sign Wade Redden of the Ottawa Senators next year when he's an unrestricted free agent. Redden is eight years younger.
The Philadelphia Flyers have had internal discussions about a possible outdoor game to be played at Penn State University's Beaver Stadium. The Pittsburgh Penguins are interested, and this could become an annual event. "We've talked to the Pittsburgh guys and they're going to noodle it around," Flyers president Peter Luukko said. Redden to waive NTC?
According to Marty York of the Metro News, Wade Redden may waive his no trade clause and clear the way for a deal to send him to the Chicago Blackhawks. York cites that "NHL insiders" suggest this may happen soon. Last week, it was revealed that GM Dale Tallon of the Hawks was interested in the Ottawa defenseman. Source

Flames interested in Forsberg?
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, five of six Canadian teams have inquired about Peter Forsberg's status. The Calgary Flames interest has been persistent with the thinking Forsberg and Iginla would make a nice 1-2 punch. He also mentioned that the teams most likely to land Forsberg are, in order: Philadelphia, Colorado, Detroit and Anaheim. The more intriguing question is, which team isn't interested in Forsberg? Scotty Bowman has once again been forced to deny the rumours surrounding him and the Maple Leafs. Bowman is happy with Detroit and not interested in a consulting job, however, he had this to say: I like my relationship with the Wings organization, and quite honestly, if something big came along maybe I would consider it, but not to be a mentor or something like that," Bowman said.
