"League sources" are saying that the Montreal Canadiens are interested in acquiring forward Ryan Smyth from the Colorado Avalanche. Avs GM Francois Giguere is shopping the forward, as well as several other players. Giguere has orders from ownership to slash payroll. Smyth has three years left on a $6.5 million a year deal, and also has a no trade clause. Brochu's take: No one is going to take Smyth at $6.5 million, and especially not for three more years! Smyth is a good forward but his value is not in his production. I really don't believe in all these Smyth rumours.
The Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning may be interested in Ottawa Senators defenseman Christoph Schubert. The Sens would like defenseman Ladislav Smid in return. Brochu's take: While both teams need defensemen desperately, there are better options for Schubert. As for Smid, I think he's worth more than Schubert, Bruce.
The Atlanta Thrashers have been shopping defensemen Ron Hainsey and Niclas Havelid. Both are expected to be dealt at the deadline. Brochu's take: Havelid, yes. Hainsey, no.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are interested in acquiring forward Erik Cole. Brochu's take: Like I've said before, as long as the Oilers are in the playoff race, they won't be subtracting roster players.
The Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks are interested in Sens forward Chris Neil.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are interested in Alex Kovalev. There's also rumors that the Penguins are interested in re-acquiring him. Brochu's take: The BJs are looking for more centres than wingers. The Pens could be a good fit for Kovalev.

More July 2nd NHL signings

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed defenseman Ron Hainsey to a five-years, $22.5 million contract.
The Ottawa Senators have signed forward Jarkko Ruutu to a three-year, $3.9 million contract.
The Sens also re-signed forward Shean Donovan to a two-year contract worth $1.25 million.
The New York Islanders have signed Doug Weight to a one-year, $1.75 million contract, with performance bonuses that could earn him up to $4 million.
The Isles have also signed goalie Yann Danis to a one-year contract.
The Colorado Avalanche re-signed forward Wojtek Wolski to a two-year contract extension.
The Calgary Flames have signed forward Curtis Glencross to a three-year, $3.2 million contract. The Flames also re-signed defenseman Jim Vandermeer to a three-year, $6.9 million contract. The Flames also signed Pete Vandermeer to a contract.
The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenseman Stu Bickel to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The Washinton Capitals have signed right wing Graham Mink and defenseman Tyler Sloan.
The Philadelphia Flyers have signed left wing Sean Curry to a two-year contract.

Montreal/San Jose rumours run wild
Various sources on the internet have confirmed of trade rumors of a Montreal Canadiens and San Jose Sharks blockbuster deal. A Montreal Gazette columnist is citing TSN's Bob McKenzie about a deal involving an exchange of Saku Koivu and Michael Ryder for Patrick Marleau and Steve Bernier. Other radio reports in Montreal suggest Joe Pavelski could be involved.
Other names that have been tossed around the rumour mill are Francis Bouillon, Jaroslav Halak and Kyle McLaren. Source
The Anaheim Ducks trade watch continues into day 8. A trade looks to be imminent according to the Ducks official NHL website. According to Marty York of Metro News, the Ducks have also come to a "verbal agreement" with UFA Teemu Selanne, and will likely return sometime after the new year. Source
The Puck-rakers blog on the Columbus Dispatch website is speculating that now is a perfect time for a big Blue Jackets trade. Writer Aaron Portzline is reporting that defenseman Ron Hainsey and goaltender Fredrik Norrena may have some value to NHL teams to bring back scoring in the Columbus lineup.
Las Vegas remains hot on the rumor mill to land an NHL expansion franchise. According to one source long connected with league dealings, the fee will be some $300 million - more than three times the asking price prior to the CBA fixing player salaries. Hollywood's Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of such hits as "Top Gun" and "Pirates of the Caribbean," is the rumored money man for a franchise that could open for business in 2009-10. Source
