The Montreal Canadiens have traded Kyle Chipchura to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 4th round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Brochu's take: Chipchura's lack of offense in the pros has severely hampered his development. Maybe a change of scenery will help.
The Chicago Blackhawks have called a press conference for Thursday afternoon when it's expected that they will announce contract extensions for Patrik Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith. Kane and Toews deals is believed to be both in the 5 year range, while Keith's deal is in the 13 year range. TSN's Bob McKenzie believes that the Hawks may place defenseman Brent Sopel and his $2.4 million on waivers. Brochu's take: The Hawks are pretty much at the max of their salary cap for next season, and they still might need to free up some "tagging room". Moves may be coming soon.
The New York Rangers have claimed forward Erik Christensen off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks. The Rangers have also placed goalie Steve Valiquette on waivers.
The Atlanta Thrashers have placed defenseman Noah Welch on waivers.

Latest NHL Signings! Part XVI
The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Mark Cullen to a one-year, two-way deal.
The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed defenseman James Wisniewski to a one-year contract.
The Los Angeles Kings have signed forward Brandon Segal to a two-year contract. Brochu's take: Not the brother of Steven, I imagine.
The Atlanta Thrashers have signed defenseman Noah Welch to a one-year contract. The Thrashers have also come to terms with forward Anthony Stewart.
The Nashville Predators have re-signed forward Nolan Yonkman.
The Boston Bruins have signed forwards Trent Whitfield and Drew Larman, and defensemen Rob Kwiet and Zach McKelvie to one-year deals.
The Washington Capitals have signed forward Boyd Gordon to a one-year contract.

Trade deadline wrap-up, Part 2
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Nik Antropov to the New York Rangers in exchange for a second round draft pick as well as a conditional draft pick. Brochu's take: I guess the price came down after all, as GM Brian Burke was asking for a first. The Rangers seem to be making a big run in the playoffs.
The Leafs also traded forward Dominic Moore to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round draft pick. Brochu's take: Burke continues to collect more picks.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have also traded goalie Olaf Kolzig, defencemen Jamie Heward and Andy Rogers and a fourth-round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a prospect Richard Petiot. Brochu's take: What??? How did the NHL even allow such a trade to happen. Yes, it's a pure salary dump, but teams should at least make the deal somewhat fair. Maple Leafs win this one, no question.
Tampa Bay Lightning have traded defenseman Steve Eminger to the Florida Panthers for defenceman Noah Welch and a third round draft pick.
The Bolts also traded forward Mark Recchi and a second round draft pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to the Boston Bruins in exchange for defenseman Matt Lashoff and forward Martins Karsums. Brochu's take: A fairly even trade, as Recchi could be a good playoff performer. Lashoff and Karsums are good young players that will probably be traded by the Bolts in the summer. ;-)

Gilmour to try coaching
According to Sportsnet, Doug Gilmour will move into a coaching position with the Maple Leafs organization. What exactly his position will be is unclear, but he will help coach the AHL affiliate Marlies, as well as help Team Canada in the Spengler Cup. Somewhere in Canada, Don Cherry is smiling. Source
The Florida Panthers have signed Noah Welch to a two year contract. Terms were not disclosed. Welch played in 24 games in 2006-2007, splitting between Pittsburgh and Florida. Welch was acquired from the Penguins in the Gary Roberts deal. Source
