NHL and Hockey Rumors for February 21, 2013

The Buffalo Sabres have fired head coach Lindy Ruff and have named Ron Rolston as interim head coach.  Brochu's take:  Ruff shouldn't have a problem of getting another NHL head coaching job, but he may have to wait till next year.

The Sabres have placed forward Cody McCormick on waivers.

The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed goalie Viktor Fasth to a two-year, $5.8 million contract extension.

According to CBC's Elliotte Friedman, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero was watching the Colorado Avalanche/Minnesota Wild game.  Friedman speculates that he could be looking at forward Matt Cullen.  Brochu's take:  Cullen would probably only cost a draft pick.  Source

Sharks, Sabres, Lightning, Canucks make trades

The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded defensemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich to the San Jose Sharks for defensemen Matt Carle, Ty Wishart and first round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Boyle waived his no trade clause after deciding on which deal would be best for him. Brochu's take: The Sharks gave up a lot of good young talent to get Boyle. Also, this should quiet nay-sayers about players never waiving their no trade clauses.

The Sharks also sent defenseman Craig Rivet and a seventh-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for second-round selections in the 2009 and 2010 drafts.

The Vancouver Canucks acquired forward Steve Bernier from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round draft pick in 2010 and a third round pick in 2009.

Jaromir Jagr has officially signed with Avangard Omsk of the KHL for $5 million a year contract, believed to be a two-year deal with an option year.

The New York Rangers have re-signed defenseman Paul Mara to a one-year, $1.95 million contract.

The Canucks have also signed forward Mark Cullen to a contract. Terms were not disclosed.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Mikhail Grabovski to a one-year deal.

NHL rumors for April 9, 2008

According to the Buffalo News, the Sabres want to sign Ryan Miller to a long-term contract extension, but the question is, does he want to? Miller wants to meet with management to see the direction of the franchise before he commits to any new deal. Brochu's take: Miller's seen some of the best players on his team leave year after year; Daniel Briere, Chris Drury and Brian Campbell. Will Buffalo open the bank to sign him?

The San Jose Sharks have signed forward Frazer McLaren and defensemen David MacDonald and Mike Moore.

Brochu's European rumour roundup:

Anaheim Ducks forward Geoff Platt is rumoured to be signing with SCL Tigers of the Swiss Nationalliga A.

Detroit Red Wings forward Mark Cullen is also rumored to be signing with SCL Tigers.

New Jersey Devils defenseman Olli Malmivaara is rumored to be signing with JYP in Finland.

Vancouver Canucks forward Brad Moran is rumoured to be signing with Skelleftea of the SEL.
