Rumors continue to persist that the Philadelphia Flyers are looking to trade forward Jeff Carter. The latest involves the Vancouver Canucks sending forward Ryan Kesler and defenseman Kevin Bieksa to the Flyers in exchange for Carter and defenseman Ryan Parent. Brochu's take: This could make a very interesting trade, as the Flyers have been interested in Kesler for some time and Carter would give an offensive punch to the Canucks.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for Mar 6, 2009
The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed free agent forward Jeff Hamilton for the rest of the season. Brochu's take: A curious move, coming after the NHL trade deadline. He's likely a roster filler so the Leafs don't have to use their callups.
According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, the Florida Panthers were weighing two offers for defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, who was ultimately not traded. The Vancouver Canucks were willing to give up forward Mason Raymond and a 1st rounde draft pick. It's believed that Florida wanted either defensemen Kevin Bieksa or Alex Edler included and GM Mike Gillis wasn't willing to make the move. The Philadelphia Flyers were offering Joffrey Lupul or Scottie Upshall along with prospect James van Riemsdyk and a 1st round pick. The Panthers wanted Scott Hartnell. Upshall was eventually traded to the Phoenix Coyotes. Brochu's take: In my opinion, GM Jacques Martin will regret not getting something for Bouwmeester. He's already turned down a contract offer, and even if the Panthers make the playoffs, it's not guaranteed they'll make it far. However, I do think that Bouwmeester's negotiation rights will be offered in the summer, likely for a draft pick. Source
The Washington Post's Tarik El-Bashir is reporting that the Capitals had talked to the Anaheim Ducks about acquiring Chris Pronger, but the asking price was much too high. The Ducks wanted defenseman Karl Alzner, goalie Simeon Varlamov and prospect John Carlson. Brochu's take: That would fall in line with Pronger's supposed asking price. Look for a similar type of package by other NHL teams this summer, when Pronger will be available. Source

During TSN's broadcast of the NHL game between the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators, analyst Bob McKenzie mentioned that Canucks defensemen Mattias Ohlund and Kevin Bieksa have both been in the rumor mill, and several teams have been asking if they are available. McKenzie suggests that teams with surplus offensive players, such as the Philadephia Flyers, could help out the Canucks, while at the same time shed some salary to fit free agent Brendan Shanahan. Brochu's take: McKenzie also mentioned the possibilty of a Joffrey Lupul or Jeff Carter moving. It will take a good package to pry those steady defenseman out of Vancouver.

Brochu's take: A good deal for LA, but what has happened to the second contract? It seems that young impact players move from their entry-level contracts straight into lucrative contracts that, in the past, would be reserved for their third contract.

The Vancouver Canucks have traded forward Ryan Shannon to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Lawrence Nycholat. Brochu's take: A depth move, the Canucks have more than enough bottom-6 forwards. As for Nycholat, the veteran AHLer should provide some insurance for the Nucks defense.

According to Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun, there are rumors of a three way trade between the Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings and Ottawa Senators. According to "insiders", Ottawa would trade goalie Martin Gerber and defenceman Andrej Meszaros to Los Angeles, the Kings would move forward Anze Kopitar to Chicago and the Blackhawks would send goalie Nikolai Khabibulin and either of defenseman Brent Seabrook or Cam Barker to the Senators. Brochu's take: A rumor that came from the Ottawa Sun and it's not from Bruce Garrioch? It's GOTTA be true! But seriously, this won't happen. Kopitar is part of the youth movement in LA, and Ottawa really doesn't get any better. The likelihood of the Hawks shopping one of their young D-men is well known. Source

Rumors from the NHL Entry draft

Canucks to make big off-season changes?
Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis pledged for changes during his press conference on Monday. Nonis called missing the playoffs unacceptable and promised significant changes this summer. He expects to address the scoring issue with either trades or free agent signings. Brochu's take: With nearly $15 million potentially to spend, this should be a busy off-season for the Canucks. If they can trade one of their defenseman like Kevin Bieksa or Alexander Edler for some scoring, they could return to the playoffs. The Carolina Hurricanes were one of the 7-8 teams interested in Edler, and rumours could escalate this summer. Source

Avalanche acquire Bacashihua
The Colorado Avalanche have acquired goaltender Jason Bacashihua from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft. The Avs assigned Bacashihua to Lake Erie, the team's AHL affiliate in Cleveland. TSN
The LA Times is reporting that Scott Niedermayer has begun skating and could return to the Ducks by mid-December. Niedermayer's agent, Kevin Epp told the LA Times that the four-time Stanley Cup Champion has not yet made a decision and that he does not expect the defenceman to make one for "another month" but that the 34-year old Niedermayer has been practicing with former Ducks Travis Green and Jeff Friesen.
