Hockey and NHL rumors for July 30, 2009

The Tampa Bay Lightning are buying out the rest of forward Vaclav Prospal's contract. He has 3 years at $3.5 million per year left on his deal, which means a 6-year cap hit of $1.167 million if his contract is bought out. Brochu's take: Good to see TB management is back at making stupid hockey decisions. Prospal is a decent point producer for his salary. Having that dead cap space for that long is not a good idea for any team.

The Minnesota Wild have re-signed goalie Josh Harding to a 1-year, $1.1 million contract. Brochu's take: I expect Harding will be traded in 2009-2010.

The Boston Bruins have traded defenseman Aaron Ward to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Patrick Eaves and a fourth-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The Canes have re-signed forward Tuomo Ruutu to a 3-year, $11.4 million contract.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded forward Radim Vrbata to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for forward Todd Fedoruk and defenseman David Hale. The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goalie Brent Johnson to a 1-year, $525,000 contract.

The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed defenseman Denis Grebeshkov to a 1-year, $3.15 million contract.

Hockey and NHL rumors for July 21, 2009

The San Jose Sharks remain interested in Ottawa Senators forward Dany Heatley. Ken Warren of the Canwest News Service speculates that GM Doug Wilson is still looking to make changes, and the acquistion of Heatley would definitely bring some of that change. Warren suggests that it's possible to trade forwards Patrick Marleau and Jonathon Cheechoo in exchange for the disgruntled forward. Brochu's take: Marleau still has a no trade clause. Value-wise, it's not a bad trade, but Cheechoo is a shadow of his 56-goal season. Marleau's play has improved under coach Richards, but who knows what he will be under coach Clouston. Source

The Phoenix Coyotes have re-signed forwards David Spina and Jeff Hoggan, and defenseman Sean Sullivan to contracts. Terms were not disclosed.

The Carolina Hurricanes have re-signed defensemen Brett Carson and Bryan Rodney to one-year, two-way contracts.

Atlanta Thrashers forward Joe Motzko has left the organization and signed with HC MVD of the KHL.

Florida Panthers forward Janis Sprukts has left the organization and signed with Latvian/KHL club Dinamo Riga. Brochu's take: Sprukts always brings memories back of that crazy rumor he was going to sign with the Habs. I don't think we'll see him in the NHL again.

Phoenix Coyotes forward Joakim Lindstrom has left the organization and signed with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in Russia.

Detroit Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler has signed a two-year deal with Dynamo Moskva (Moscow) worth approximately $2-3 million a year. Brochu's take: Sorry, I haven't had time to comment before. The matter is now being decided by the IIHF, and it's been reported that the KHL and NHL will comply with their ruling. The issue seems to be that Hudler went to arbitration, thus meaning he "owes" the Wings one year.

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed forward Jason Ward to a one-year contract.

Forward Mike Iggulden has left the New York Islanders and signed with Dinamo Riga.

The New Jersey Devils have named Jacques Lemaire as their new head coach. Brochu's take: Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Lemaire will maintain the Devils' defensive system.

The Chicago Blackhawks have fired GM Dale Tallon. Stan Bowman has been named interim GM. Brochu's take: From Chicago reports, this firing doesn't have to do with the RFA qualifying offeers fiasco, but more with internal organization re-structuring. You have to imagine that Scotty Bowman is involved in this somehow, along with the president of the Hawks.

The Philadephia Flyers have re-signed defenseman Chris Pronger to a 7-year, $34.9 million contract extension. Brochu's take: The contract is not even heavily front loaded, so in the last 3 years of this contract, he will still have a cap hit of around $5 million. I should be caught up by tomorrow, I still have to post my analysis of the Pronger extension, and the Sakic retirement. There's a few more signings I have to catch up to as well.

The Anaheim Ducks have signed forward Saku Koivu to a 1-year, $3.25 million contract. Brochu's take: And not with a bang but a whimper, the captain of the Montreal Canadiens for the past decade or so leaves the Habs. It's a bit sad that the organization decided for a new direction, but I think Koivu will have a bit of a career revival playing with his buddy Selanne in Orange County.

The Ducks also signed forward Todd Marchant to a 2-year, $2.25 million million contract.

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Kris Versteeg to a 3-year, $9.2 million contract. Brochu's take: So the last major RFA on Chicago's roster has signed, which pretty much negates that whole "misfiling" issue. The investigation into that matter is still ongoing.

Monday, July 06, 2009

Latest NHL signings! Part X

The Ottawa Senators have signed forward Alex Kovalev to a 2-year, $10 million contract. Brochu's take: At $5 million, that's a bit pricey. And this certainly spells the end of Dany Heatley in Ottawa. GM Bryan Murray has a bit of work this summer to get under the cap.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for July 4, 2009

Happy July 4th to my American readers! I'm going to wrap up some of the trades that have gone down, I haven't had time to include them here.

The Colorado Avalanche have traded forward Ryan Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing and a 5th round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Brochu's take: With Gomez, Kubina and now Smyth, this is the official "Summer of the Salary Dump". Smyth will be a good veteran addition to the young Kings lineup, but earns $6 million per for 3 more years. Quincey is a good young blueliner, but the rest is filler.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Pavel Kubina and the rights to forward Tim Stapleton to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Garnet Exelby and forward Colin Stuart. Brochu's take: Another salary dump, but Burke didn't even get draft picks back.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed forward Rick Nash to a 8-year, $62.4 million contract extension. Brochu's take: At a yearly salary cap hit of $7.8 million, Nash is slightly overpaid, but he is the Jackets one franchise star. It will also solidify Columbus as a solid hockey city.

Latest NHL signings!

Updated as of 11:50 AM PST

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Marian Hossa to a 12-year, $62.4 million contract. Brochu's take: What is GM Dale Tallon doing? He already has great players in Toews and Kane, whose contracts are up next year and both could command $6 million+. Not to mention he still has several RFAs to sign. Do the Hawks really need Hossa's offense?

The Florida Panthers have re-signed RFA forward David Booth to a 6-year, $25.5 million contract.

The Colorado Avalanche have signed goalie Craig Anderson to a 2-year, $3.6 million contract.

The New York Islanders have signed goalie Dwayne Roloson to a 2-year, $5 million contract.

Heatley deal not dead, latest signings

The NHL rumor world was on fire yesterday as news filtered out that the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers have a deal in place for Dany Heatley, but it was revealed that Heatley did not waive his no trade clause to go to Edmonton. The deal would have sent Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid to the Sens in exchange for Heatley. The much-talked $4 million bonus will only be paid after 11:59 PM July 1st (today), so there's still time for the Senators to work out the deal. Brochu's take: TSN is reporting that Heatley has not flat out refused the trade, he has just not done anything. This deal could still be on.

Sedins re-signed, Bolts sign Ohlund

The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed Daniel and Henrik Sedin to 5-year, $30.5 million contracts. Brochu's take: Not a bad deal at all. For comparable scorers, it's quite a bargain.

Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Mattias Ohlund to a seven-year contract worth $24.5 million. Brochu's take: It's front loaded, so he will earn significantly less in the later years.

The Calgary Flames have signed defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a 5-year contract worth $6.68 million per year. Brochu's take: So the Flames essentially got Bouwmeester for a third rounder. Great move by GM Darryl Sutter, who managed to sign the blueliner at slightly less than market value.

The New York Islanders have traded forward Ben Walter and future considerations to the New Jersey Devils for the rights to forward Tony Romano.
