The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Marian Hossa to a 12-year, $62.4 million contract. Brochu's take: What is GM Dale Tallon doing? He already has great players in Toews and Kane, whose contracts are up next year and both could command $6 million+. Not to mention he still has several RFAs to sign. Do the Hawks really need Hossa's offense?
The Florida Panthers have re-signed RFA forward David Booth to a 6-year, $25.5 million contract.
The New Jersey Devils have re-signed defenseman Andy Greene. Terms were not disclosed.
The Colorado Avalanche have signed goalie Craig Anderson to a 2-year, $3.6 million contract.
The St. Louis Blues have signed goalie Ty Conklin to a 2-year, $2.6 million contract. Brochu's take: No Winter Classic for Conklin, who has managed to play for 3 of those games already.

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has requested and been granted permission by the Anaheim Ducks to talk to Dave Nonis about a position with the Leafs. Nonis has been a senior advisor in the Ducks organization. Brochu's take: Everybody in the NHL knew Burke would call his old buddy as soon as possible. Look for Nonis to become the new vice-president and director of hockey operations.

As for the "significant trade", the Oilers need a shakeup in the worst way. NHL and Hockey Rumors for Nov 5, 2008
During TSN's broadcast of the NHL game between the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators, analyst Bob McKenzie mentioned that Canucks defensemen Mattias Ohlund and Kevin Bieksa have both been in the rumor mill, and several teams have been asking if they are available. McKenzie suggests that teams with surplus offensive players, such as the Philadephia Flyers, could help out the Canucks, while at the same time shed some salary to fit free agent Brendan Shanahan. Brochu's take: McKenzie also mentioned the possibilty of a Joffrey Lupul or Jeff Carter moving. It will take a good package to pry those steady defenseman out of Vancouver.
According to the Sun Sentinel, Florida Panthers GM Jacques Martin spoke about the Panthers’ tepid start and noted that he’s considering moving some veteran players who aren’t producing. “When I look at our performance so far, I don’t think it’s good enough,” Martin said. “We made some moves in the offseason and some of our players have to be better. Some of our veterans have to give us a better performance.” Brochu's take: Since there's not exactly a surplus of veterans on the Cats' roster, I would assume he is speaking about Richard Zednik and Jay Bouwmeester. Marty York of Metro News is reporting rumors that the Edmonton Oilers are trying to trade a goaltender for a "hard-nosed forward. or two." York quotes two NHL sources that the Oilers are dangling one of their three goalies as trade bait. The Oilers currently have Dwayne Roloson, Mathieu Garon and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers on their roster. Brochu's take: I doubt that the Oilers are shopping Garon or Drouin-Deslauriers, but they have been shopping Roloson for a long time. Source

NHL and hockey rumors for Oct 19, 2008
On CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, the "Hotstove" panel mentioned that Philadelphia Flyers coach John Stevens could be the next head coach to be fired, if the Flyers don't pull out of their recent slump.
It was also mentioned that Chicago Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon could be in danger, but there is no chance that senior adviser Scotty Bowman will take over. It's been rumored that Tallon was forced to fire coach Denis Savard by Bowman and president John McDonaugh.
Sportsnet's Mike Brophy is quoting "sources" that goaltender Dwayne Roloson has asked to be traded. There are rumours that the Nashville Predators may be interested in the veteran goalie. Brochu's take: It's no secret the Oilers are shopping Roloson, but there haven't been any takers. The Preds are looking for an experienced backup, so "Roli" may be a good fit.
The following rumors are from the irrepressible Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
Boston Bruins forward Peter Schaefer turned down a $2.1 million contract to play in the KHL. The Bruins are still looking to deal the forward for a defenseman. Brochu's take: Not many teams are going to take that much salary back, especially for a third liner.
The Vancouver Canucks are looking to deal Matt Pettinger, and the Atlanta Thrashers, Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes may have interest.

Hockey rumors from all over

Analyst Al Strachan believes there is "gossip" that the Vancouver Canucks could trade Roberto Luongo to the Ottawa Senators for Jason Spezza. Strachan believes that the rumors and speculation that Luongo wants out of Vancouver is distracting him. Brochu's take: Luongo clearly stated that he does not want out of Vancouver and is happy. But Strachan believes otherwise so it must be true. ;-)
Pierre LeBrun brings up the rumor around the trade deadline of the Florida Panthers asking for Daniel and Henrik Sedin in exchange for Olli Jokinen. LeBrun believes with the uncertainty of the Panthers management, this deal could be revisited in the summer. Brochu's take: I expect the Canucks to make a strong push for Jokinen sometime around the entry draft, as Jokinen and Luongo are good friends.

Brochu's take: I didn't know Garrioch was so in tune with Demitra's personal preferences. Demitra will probably stay in Minnesota, as he gets along with friend and fellow Slovak Marian Gaborik.

Brad Richards to Philly?
The following rumours come from Al Strachan, courtesy of the show "The Spin" on The Score network:

Lightning interested in Roloson, Theodore?
According to the Boston Globe, there are rumors that the Tampa Bay Lightning are "sniffing around" Edmonton Oilers goaltender Dwayne Roloson and Colorado Avalanche netminder Jose Theodore. The Lightning are still looking for a no. 1 goalie. Source
The Globe is also reporting that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sergei Fedorov could be headed to the Carolina Hurricanes. Leftover NHL rumors from the weekend
There's been a lot of rumors over this weekend; here are some that didn't make the last post:
There's a rumour that the Ottawa Senators would like to trade goaltender Ray Emery to the Chicago Blackhawks for Nikolai Khabibulin.
Another one involves the Sens sending Antoine Vermette and a "high draft choice" to the Atlanta Thrashers for Marian Hossa. Considering some of the Hossa offers flying around, it would take more from the Senators to get Hossa.
Another Senators rumour involves Ray Emery, Andrej Meszaros and Joe Corvo sent to the Edmonton Oilers for Dwayne Roloson, Joni Pitkanen and Jarret Stoll.

Canadiens and Thrashers talking?
La Presse is reporting that Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell was spotted at the Montreal Canadiens-New York Rangers game in Montreal on Sunday. Waddell is believed to have met with GM Bob Gainey, and talks were surrounded around Mathieu Dandenault. Michael Ryder's name was also tossed in, as he was a recent healthy scratch. Marian Hossa's name remains in the rumor mill, and could be a nice fit in Montreal. Source

NHL trade rumors from Marty York
The following rumours are from Marty York of Metro News:
The Colorado Avalanche have had it with the inconsistent goaltending of Jose Theodore and Peter Budaj and are in trade talks with several teams, including the Ottawa Senators. The Sens have lost confidence in Martin Gerber but Avalanche execs consider him an upgrade over Theodore and Budaj, making a Colorado-Ottawa trade a possibility.
The Edmonton Oilers won't publicly say Dwayne Roloson has been demoted but they believe he's regressed and are relying more on their so-called backup, Mathieu Garon.
Several teams have turned down offers from the Tampa Bay Lightning concerning goalie Marc Denis. Denis has been shopped all season, but no one wants his contract. The Colorado Avalanche have already told the Lightning that they are not interested.
York is reporting that Washington Capitals forward Michael Nylander may be hiding an injury and could miss a few games. He is also reporting that the bad ice in Washington could explain some of their failures.
The NHL will no longer subsidize an annual road trip in which the fathers of players joined their sons, a trip that many teams are doing this season. Joe Bowen, the Toronto Maple Leafs play-by-play announcer, said the NHL decided to count the fathers’ trips against the clubs’ salary caps, which ultimately meant they could not happen any more.
Mark Recchi has cleared waivers and assigned to the Pittsburgh Penguins AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre. It's expected that he will be recalled soon on re-entry waivers.
The Anaheim Ducks have already received offers for their players. According to The Globe and Mail, the Ducks need to free up only around $1 million in "tagging room" for players under contract for 2008-2009. "We have an offer," GM Brian Burke said. "I could hang up this phone and fix this right away. We're trying to make the best hockey deal we can make. We're not in a bind at all. Of the 29 teams — we don't talk to Edmonton - so of the 28 other teams, there's plenty of interest in making this predicament go away." Source

Phaneuf, Ovechkin reject extensions, Roloson shopped?
Marty York of Metro News is reporting that Dion Phaneuf and Alexander Ovechkin have rejected contract extension proposals from the Calgary Flames and Washington Capitals, respectively. Both players are due to be RFA next summer and could receive lucrative offer sheets from other teams. The Caps offered Ovechkin a five-year pact similar to the deal the Pittsburgh Penguins gave Sidney Crosby ($8.7 million a season), but the sniper is demanding between $9 and $10 million a year.
