The Los Angeles Kings have re-signed defenseman Jack Johnson to a 2-year contract extension. Brochu's take: The restricted free agent was the subject of trade rumors this summer, but so much for that. But I believe he will be traded sometime this season.
The Minnesota Wild have signed goalie Wade Dubielewicz to a one-year contract. The Wild have also signed forwards Danny Irmen, Duncan Milroy, Benoit Pouliot, Jon DiSalvatore and defenseman Clayton Stoner to one-year deals.
The Atlanta Thrashers have signed defensemen Grant Lewis and Scott Lehman.
The New Jersey Devils have signed defenseman Cory Murphy to a contract.

EDM/PIT trade, Dubielewicz claimed by Columbus
The Edmonton Oilers traded goaltender Mathieu Garon to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday for goaltender Dany Sabourin, forward Ryan Stone, and a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Brochu's take: Hmmm. This doesn't exactly solve Edmonton's three-goalie carousel. I assume Sabourin will be sent to the minors (via waivers.). This is a cost-cutting move as well, as Garon's salary has come off the books.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed goalie Wade Dubielewicz off waivers from the New York Islanders. Dubielewicz had to clear waivers before he could play for the Islanders, after spending the early part of the 2008-2009 season with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL. Brochu's take: Poor guy. He was at the pre-game for the Isle before he got called off and told he was claimed. It's strange that Columbus waited this long to get a backup, considering the amount of goailes available lately. NHL and Hockey Rumors for Jan 16, 2009
Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg denied a report by CBC's Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman that he's turned down a 10-year, $75-million contract offer from the team. "No, it's not (accurate)," Zetterberg said Thursday. "Usually I don't want to comment on that, but that's not true. I haven't turned down an offer of $75 million." The Red Wings and their Swedish star have been negotiating on and off since last June, but there has been no sense of urgency from either side. Brochu's take: Interesting that Zetterberg took the time to dismiss the report. A deal will be done, it's just a matter of time. Source
According to the Toronto Star, Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is still looking to make trades, but nothing has been interesting. Burke was in Boston watching defenceman Matt Gilroy of the Boston University Terriers, probably the most sought-after U.S. college free agent available this spring. Burke wants to sign around five college free agents, hoping two will make it. On the NHL front, the Leafs are rumored to be shopping defenseman Anton Stralman. Brochu's take: FYI, this blog will be updated frequently AFTER the trade deadline, when college free agents are usually signed (March-April). Other rumor sites tend to shut down by then, but not here. Source

However, according to league sources this game could be perceived as a veiled threat of potential relocation if plans for a new arena on Long Island aren’t soon finalized. Brochu's take: Kansas City has been in the running for an NHL franchise for years, ever since they offered free rent to the Pittsburgh Penguins a few years ago. Sanford on waivers, Columbus/Atlanta trade
The Vancouver Canucks have placed Curtis Sanford on waivers. Brochu's take: If he clears, the Canucks have promised to trade him to another team. Rumors are that the Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars and New York Islanders are the most interested.

Spezza, Jokinen, Marleau on the move?
According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, three elite centres could be on the trading block this summer:
Ottawa Senators forward Jason Spezza, whose $8 million a year contract extension kicks in this summer.
Florida Panthers forward Olli Jokinen, with the Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks interested.
San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau, whose no trade clause becomes effective July 1. Garrioch speculates that the Boston Bruins may give up Glen Murray as part of a package deal. Brochu's take: Spezza's not going anywhere, but Jokinen may have used up his nine lives in Florida. GM Jacques Martin will do everything in his power to trade him. As for Marleau, no one wants Murray and his $4 million contract, so Garrioch can keep on speculating.
Phoenix Coyotes forward Blake Wheeler turned down Phoenix's entry-level deal and will now become an unrestricted free agent. The deal was the maximum offered under the old CBA. Wheeler is free to sign with any team, however he still has to comply with entry-level rules. There are rumors that his home state team, the Minnesota Wild, are interested.
The New York Islanders will not be re-signing impending UFAs Wade Dubielewicz, Miroslav Satan, Josef Vasicek and Ruslan Fedotenko. NHL rumors for April 10, 2008
Sergei Samsonov is happy with the Carolina Hurricanes, and would like to re-sign with the club. He could potentially earn a better contract in the summer, but given his luck with other teams, Samsonov may consider otherwise. Brochu's take: The Hurricanes were only picking up half of Samsonov's $3.5 million salary, and it's likely he'll ask for something in the $2-2.5 million range, as he almost maintained a point-a-game average with the 'Canes.
