NHL and Hockey Rumors for June 22, 2009
There are rumors that the Edmonton Oilers will focus their attention in the free agent market on forward Nik Antropov. Antropov made $2.15 million last season, and is looking for at least double that amount for 4-5 years. Brochu's take: If the marquee free agent wingers are snapped up by other NHL teams, the Oilers may have to overpay to land Antropov.

Trade deadline wrap-up, Part 2
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Nik Antropov to the New York Rangers in exchange for a second round draft pick as well as a conditional draft pick. Brochu's take: I guess the price came down after all, as GM Brian Burke was asking for a first. The Rangers seem to be making a big run in the playoffs.
The Leafs also traded forward Dominic Moore to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round draft pick. Brochu's take: Burke continues to collect more picks.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have also traded goalie Olaf Kolzig, defencemen Jamie Heward and Andy Rogers and a fourth-round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a prospect Richard Petiot. Brochu's take: What??? How did the NHL even allow such a trade to happen. Yes, it's a pure salary dump, but teams should at least make the deal somewhat fair. Maple Leafs win this one, no question.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for Feb 18, 2009
According to Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Maple Leafs were close to a deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins last weekend, but the firing of Michel Therrien could have scuttled those talks. Rumors were that the Leafs would send Nik Antropov to the Pens for Ryan Whitney, or a package of a 1st rounder and defenseman Alex Goligoski. There also was belief that if the Penguins acquired Antropov, he may have been used as part of a package for a trade to the Atlanta Thrashers for scoring whiz Ilya Kovalchuk and Colby Armstrong. Brochu's take: First, that would be a huge overpayment for Antropov, who is definitely not worth a Whitney or even a Goligoski. Antropov is being shopped, but his value is not that high. As for Kovalchuk rumor, he's not moving this year and certainly not in a package involving Antropov. Source

The St. Louis Blues have re-signed forward Andy McDonald to a four-year, $18.8 million contract extension. Brochu's take: A fair price for a point-a-game player. Good move by the Blues.
According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, the Montreal Canadiens and Phoenix Coyotes are in trade discussions. Forward Olli Jokinen and defenseman Derek Morris were mentioned as possible targets. Brochu's take: The Habs are still looking to make a big splash on the trade front, but has done nothing yet. Their recent struggles might trigger a move.

"From my take, at this point, I don't see any reason to put a new contract offer on the table here," Burke told AM 640. "I think that this might be time for a change of scenery for Nik Antropov. This really doesn't hurt Antropov's value as he was already on the market. Source

According to Sportsnet, the Ottawa Senators will either trade Martin Gerber or send him to the AHL on Tuesday. GM Bryan Murray confirmed that one team has had interest in Gerber, and that team is believed to be the Calgary Flames, who are looking for some goalie insurance. Brochu's take: Murray noted that he didn't want to take much salary back. The Sens may have to sweeten the deal with a draft pick.
The Chicago Daily Herald is reporting that the Blackhawks could be looking to add some veteran depth to their lineup. Possible targets could be New York Islanders forwards Bill Guerin, Mike Sillinger and Doug Weight, Los Angeles Kings forward Kyle Calder, Senators forward Chris Neil, and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nik Antropov. Brochu's take: The Islanders are rumored to be conducting a fire sale, so all those forwards could be had. Not sure why the Hawks would look at Calder again, since he hasn't done much in LA. Source

The Edmonton Oilers are interested in Ottawa Senators forward Mike Fisher. GM Steve Tambellini would really like to add the hard-nosed player. Brochu's take: Fisher hasn't produced as his salary should indicate. I doubt the Oilers would want to add a long term contract like that.

The Senators, Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings are interested in acquiring Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle.

According to former New York Islanders VP of Public Relations Chris Botta, veteran forwards Doug Weight and Bill Guerin could be traded to bring back draft picks or young players to the Isles. However, GM Garth Snow has a "gentleman's agreement" with the players, so they would likely have to approve any trades. Weight has previously stated that he doesn't want to move anywhere in the middle of the season. Darren Dreger of TSN is reporting that once Brian Burke is officially named the new president and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he will start shaping the team in his mode. The rumor is that defensemen Tomas Kaberle and Pavel Kubina could be on the trading block, despite their no trade clauses. Alex Ponikarovsky and Nik Antropov are also believed to be considered trade bait. Brochu's take: There has been no "official" signing of Burke, yet. Rumor update on Forsberg, Sundin, Jokinen, Hossa
TSN's Bob McKenzie reported on Tuesday trade rumors from around the league, especially three of the biggest names to be involved around the NHL trade deadline.
Peter Forsberg could make a decision to return to the NHL as early as within one week. Forsberg has been testing his foot and has so far has no setbacks. McKenzie believes Forsberg's signing could start the dominoes falling in the trade market.
Toronto Maple Leafs Interim GM Cliff Fletcher has quietly shopped Mats Sundin around the league to gauge what kind of assets he could get in return.
Olli Jokinen is being shopped by the Florida Panthers, and they are looking for 2 young players in return.
The Team 1200 radio in Ottawa reported that Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell has given Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey permission to speak to Marian Hossa's agent Ritch Winter, possibly to discuss a contract extension if Hossa gets traded to the Habs. The Hossa to Montreal rumours seem to be rampant.
The Toronto Star is speculating that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nik Antropov could be traded at the deadline, due to a manageable salary and lack of a no trade clause. Source

Various sources confirm that the Edmonton Investors Group (EIG) will sell all their shares to Rexall billionaire Daryl Katz, making him the new owner of the Edmonton Oilers.
