The Boston Bruins have traded defenseman Aaron Ward to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Patrick Eaves and a fourth-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
The Bruins have placed Eaves on waivers, with the intention of buying out his contract. Brochu's take: Eaves' stock has really dropped over the last few years, as he was expected to be a 20-goal scorer.
The B's have also signed defenseman Derek Morris to a 1-year, $3.3 million contract.
The Canes have re-signed forward Tuomo Ruutu to a 3-year, $11.4 million contract.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have also re-signed goalie Justin Pogge to a 1-year, $605,000 contract. Brochu's take: There's also rumors that GM Brian Burke is trying to trade him, but his value is quite low at the moment.
The St. Louis Blues have re-signed defensemen Steve Wagner and Roman Polak.
The New York Islanders have signed forward Nate Thompson to a one-year, two-way contract.
The Philadelphia Flyers have signed forward Lukas Kaspar to a one-year deal.
The Phoenix Coyotes have signed forward Daniel Winnik to a 1-year deal.
The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed forward Petteri Nokelainen.

Trade deadline wrap-up, Part 2
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Nik Antropov to the New York Rangers in exchange for a second round draft pick as well as a conditional draft pick. Brochu's take: I guess the price came down after all, as GM Brian Burke was asking for a first. The Rangers seem to be making a big run in the playoffs.
The Leafs also traded forward Dominic Moore to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round draft pick. Brochu's take: Burke continues to collect more picks.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have also traded goalie Olaf Kolzig, defencemen Jamie Heward and Andy Rogers and a fourth-round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a prospect Richard Petiot. Brochu's take: What??? How did the NHL even allow such a trade to happen. Yes, it's a pure salary dump, but teams should at least make the deal somewhat fair. Maple Leafs win this one, no question.

Brochu's take: A fairly even trade, as Recchi could be a good playoff performer. Lashoff and Karsums are good young players that will probably be traded by the Bolts in the summer. ;-)

The lull before the storm
One quick rumor update before today's NHL free agent frenzy begins:
According to Sportsnet, the Tampa Bay Lightning have an offer on the table to Brian Rolston, but Rolston and his agent wants to wait for other offers before accepting or rejecting it. The deal is rumored to be around the same term and a little bit less than what Ryan Malone signed. (7 year, ~$29 million)
TSN is reporting that the Anaheim Ducks and forward Corey Perry are close to a new deal; a contract similiar to similar to the one that Ryan Getzlaf signed last season worth approximately $5.325 million per season. Brochu's take: This should put all the "offer sheet" rumors to rest.
Impending free agent Brian Campbell could be signing with the Atlanta Thrashers, who are rumored to be offering more money than most teams. The Ottawa Senators are in heavy pursuit of the rearguard as well.
The Edmonton Oilers could be offering a huge contract worth $9 million a year to Marian Hossa. The Vancouver Canucks are also interested in signing the winger. Brochu's take: If some team is stupid enough to give Hossa $9 million per, the NHL should implement some kind of rule to stop this silliness. Source
The Detroit Red Wings have signed Peter Worrell...err...Andreas Lilja to a two-year, $2.5 million contract extension.

Niedermayer suspended
Scott Niedermayer has been officially suspended by the Anaheim Ducks. It is strictly a formality to give the Ducks' cap space. Niedermayer still has not made a decision on his future.
Aaron Miller will undergo minor abdominal surgery and may miss some of the Vancouver Canucks preseason. GM Dave Nonis has noted that a team ususally needs "7,8 or 9" defenseman a season. He is hoping youngsters like Luc Bourdon and Alex Edler can step up, while looking for free agent depth.
