NHL and Hockey Rumors for Dec 6, 2008
According to Philly.com, the Columbus Blue Jackets are interested in Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Randy Jones. The Flyers will have to make some moves very soon, as several players will be coming off the injury reserve. Source
Pierre Lebrun reports on several free agents, who are still looking at signing with an NHL team. Several have been offered two-way contracts, but these veterans are looking for a one-way deal. Yanic Perreault, Bryan Smolinski, Jocelyn Thibault, Glen Murray, Kevyn Adams, Martin Lapointe and Dan Cloutier are all looking to hook up with a club. Brochu's take: Perreault and Smolinski have the best chance of signing, but the others all have histories of injuries that may scare some suitors off. Source

NHL and hockey rumors for June 24, 2008
The Ottawa Senators have officially bought out the contract of goalie Ray Emery, making him an unrestricted free agent. Emery signed a three-year, $9.5 million contract in July of 2007 and has two years and $6.75 million remaining on his contract. Under CBA rules, the Senators are on the hook for one-third of Emery's remaining salary, $2.25 million. That amount will be spread across twice the length of the remaining years of the contract, resulting in a cap hit of slightly less than $600,000 for the next four years. Brochu's take: The Senators couldn't find a trade partner for the troubled netminder, but some team will pick him up. Emery also has the option to play in Europe.

Pre-draft rumor and trade update

NHL rumors for April 11, 2008
Jacques Martin will not return as the Florida Panthers coach for the 2008-2009 NHL season. Team owner Alan Cohen confirmed to season ticket-holders that Martin will not return as coach, but may stay as the GM. Possible coaching candidates include Guy Charron, Mike Kitchen, Randy Cunneyworth, Bob Hartley, and Pat Quinn. Brochu's take: With Martin still with the GM job, could Olli Jokinen be on the way out? Or will Martin be able to find a coach that Jokinen can along with? Source

The Kings apparently pushed Cloutier into playing while injured, and also mistreated him as he went to the minors (refusing to give an apartment to his pregnant wife) to find his game. The Kings have yet to respond to these allegations, so make your own decision. Source

Phaneuf, Chimera extensions, waiver news
The Calgary Flames and defenseman Dion Phaneuf have agreed to a six-year, $39 million contract extension. Sources tell TSN that the deal will average $6.5 million US a season. Phaneuf will make $7.5 million in the first year, followed by $6.5 million in year two, $7 million in the third season, $6.5 million in each of the following two years and $5.5 million in the final season. Leksand talking to Selanne
According to Swedish website expressen.se, Leksands IF is heavily pursuing Teemu Selanne. Selänne had lunch with Leksand majority owner Per Olof Ejendal last Monday and Ejendal expressed to him that Leksand will do anything to get him to play for their team. "I have consulted about the Finnish player (Teemu Selänne). I'm positive that he will consider the offer." said Ejendal. Source

This resulted in a bit of a last-ditch move for the struggling goalie, who hasn't been right since hip surgery. "They say he's been at about 80%, in and out of the lineup, and we're going to shut him down for at least six weeks," Lombardi said Wednesday in Chicago. Source

Cloutier waived, Gerber to Kings?
Various sources have confirmed that the LA Kings have waived Dan Cloutier. If no one picks up him up, his $3.1 million dollar contract will come off the cap and Cloutier will most likely spend the season in the minors. There is some serious speculation that Martin Gerber will be heading to LA, and a deal could be finalized this week. LA would probably send draft picks the other way.
There's speculation that Kyle Wellwood will miss some time with a groin tweak. Darren Dreger of TSN is also reporting that Dany Heatley is seeking an $8 million a year contract, for six years. As well, Marian Hossa may wait until the summer and gauge his worth on the open UFA market. Source
