He has 3 years at $3.5 million per year left on his deal, which means a 6-year cap hit of $1.167 million if his contract is bought out. Brochu's take: Good to see TB management is back at making stupid hockey decisions. Prospal is a decent point producer for his salary. Having that dead cap space for that long is not a good idea for any team.
The Minnesota Wild have re-signed goalie Josh Harding to a 1-year, $1.1 million contract. Brochu's take: I expect Harding will be traded in 2009-2010.
The Atlanta Thrashers have signed forward Josh Gratton and defenseman Michael Vernace to one-year deals.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed forward Radim Vrbata on waivers. Vrbata had asked, and was given permission to return to the Czech Republic for "personal reason". If Vrbata clears waivers Tuesday, he will likely be assigned to his hometown team in Mlada Boleslav. Vrbata's $3 million a year contract will come off the cap, and the Lightning will not have to pay his salary. However, Vrbata's contract will still be valid, whenever he decides to return to the NHL. Brochu's take: TSN is reporting that Vrbata is citing "confidence" issues, but the Tampa.com blog has an insider's look on the situation and it is definitely sounds like personal reasons. (His wife being 5 months pregnant is a major point). Source

There's rumors that Canadian billionaire Jim Balsille may be one of the groups trying to land the Sabres. Two scouts for the Boston Bruins watched, as did one each from the Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers. Brochu's take: The Stars, Preds and Hawks are probably studying their divisional rivals, but the Bruins don't play the BJs until March. The Rangers play the Kings later this month. Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has requested and been granted permission by the Anaheim Ducks to talk to Dave Nonis about a position with the Leafs. Nonis has been a senior advisor in the Ducks organization. Brochu's take: Everybody in the NHL knew Burke would call his old buddy as soon as possible. Look for Nonis to become the new vice-president and director of hockey operations.
According to the Vancouver Province, Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman met with Mats Sundin's agent J.P. Barry in Calgary on Saturday. While the main topic of discussion was contract extentions with Mattias Ohlund, Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin, Mats Sundin's future was also in play. It's believed that Barry will speak with Sundin about narrowing down his choices to 3-4 teams. Meanwhile, Sundin has been skating and working out at a secret location in Southern California. Brochu's take: Sundin's ETA back to the NHL won't be until after the new year, and possibly in February. By the way, I think this blog should be called Sundin is Hockey, as almost there are daily (or hourly) Sundin rumors. Source

[President] Kevin [Lowe]’s just about ready to pull the trigger." Brochu's take: MacTavish has been given a vote of confidence by Lowe and GM Steve Tambellini, so I don't think he will be fired. As for the "significant trade", the Oilers need a shakeup in the worst way. The word is that the Oilers are considering putting either Mathieu Garon or Dwayne Roloson on waivers, to clear some cap space. Source

NHL and hockey rumors for Oct 31, 2008
The Ottawa Senators have re-signed forward Daniel Alfredsson to a four-year, $21.6 million contract extension. Brochu's take: A definite home town discount, considering Alfie's numbers. Will this set the bar for future contracts? I don't think so.
The Philadelphia Flyers have traded defenseman Tim Ramholt to the Nashville Predators for forward Josh Gratton. Brochu's take: Could this open up a roster spot for a new defenseman? Seems strange that the Flyers are trading a defensman when they need all they can get.
The Predators also acquired forward Hugh Jessiman from the New York Rangers for future considerations.
The St. Louis Blues have signed goaltender Chris Holt to a contract.

NHL free agent signings for July 11, 2008
Sorry about the delay, there will be another post later today focused on the KHL (Russian) rumors that have been around lately.
The Minnesota Wild have traded defenseman Shawn Belle to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Corey Locke.
The Wild have also signed forward Krys Kolanos to a contract.
The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenseman Brennan Evans to a two-year contract and defenseman Steve Montador to a one-year contract.
According to RDS.ca, the Tampa Bay Lightning have re-signed Vincent Lecavalier to a 11 year, $85M contract extension.
The Bolts also announced the resignation of executive vice president and general manager Jay Feaster. He has come to terms with the owners, as Feaster had 3 years left on his contract. Brochu's take: Everyone saw this coming when most of the deals were announced by Koules, Barrie or Lawton. It won't take him long to find a job though, as he is well respected member in the old boys club.

Updates on Campbell, Boyle, Hossa
Here are the latest trade rumors from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
Garrioch reports that "talk" is Marian Hossa has made it clear to the Atlanta Thrashers that he won't re-sign. The Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings are believed to be frontrunners. The Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins have all called GM Don Waddell about Hossa.
Negotiations between the Buffalo Sabres and defenseman Brian Campbell haven't made much progress and it looks like he will be moved at the trade deadline. The San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers and Boston Bruins have all made pitches for Campbell. The believed asking price is player, prospect and first round draft pick.
