The Los Angeles Kings have re-signed goalie Jonathan Bernier to a two-year, $2.5 million contract extension. Brochu's take: An absolute bargain. Bernier is considered one of the best young goalies not yet in the NHL.
The New York Rangers have signed forward Ruslan Fedotenko to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The Washington Capitals have signed goalie Philipp Grubauer to a three-year, entry-level contract.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for May 16, 2009
The Washington Capitals have signed forward Anton Gustafsson to a three-year, entry-level contract. Gustafsson was the Caps' 1st round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed forward Steve Bernier to a two-year, $4 million contract.

Another offer sheet matched, more signings
The St. Louis Blues signed restricted free agent forward Steve Bernier to a one-year, $2.5 million offer sheet. The Vancouver Canucks have subsequently matched the offer sheet. Brochu's take: This is nothing but pure vindictiveness on the Blues part. They knew the Canucks would match. What is the point of these two offer sheets?
The Blues also signed defenseman Mike Weaver to a contract.
According to a Slovakian publication, the Vancouver Canucks have signed Pavol Demitra to a three-year, $12 million contract. However, in an interview with Team 1040 radio, he revealed nothing is for certain, but Vancouver is his no. 1 choice. Brochu's take: It looks like the most known Canucks rumor is about to come true. The New York Islanders have signed defenceman Brendan Witt to a two-year, $6 million contract extension.

Sharks, Sabres, Lightning, Canucks make trades
The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded defensemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich to the San Jose Sharks for defensemen Matt Carle, Ty Wishart and first round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Boyle waived his no trade clause after deciding on which deal would be best for him. Brochu's take: The Sharks gave up a lot of good young talent to get Boyle. Also, this should quiet nay-sayers about players never waiving their no trade clauses.
The Sharks also sent defenseman Craig Rivet and a seventh-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for second-round selections in the 2009 and 2010 drafts.

MacLean involved with Lightning again?
According to the Puck-rakers blog on the Columbus Dispatch website, Doug MacLean could once again be involved with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Apparently, MacLean is back in good graces with Lightning majority owner Oren Koules, even though MacLean and Florida real estate developer Jeff Sherrin sued Koules for $50 million when the group's Absolute Hockey Enterprise's venture fell apart in November. It's rumored that he could become the new president or GM (or both). Source
The same blog is saying that the Columbus Blue Jackets will be active around the NHL Entry Draft in June, as the team will be looking for a top line centre. The Jackets will probably use their 1st round pick acquired from the Adam Foote trade in a package to acquire that centre. Source
The New York Post is reporting that New York Rangers GM Glen Sather rejected a trade that would have involved sending Sean Avery to the San Jose Sharks for Steve Bernier. Writer Larry Brooks suggested that this rejection spurred the Brian Campbell trade, as well as the Marian Hossa trade, as the Pittsburgh Penguins were pursuing Bernier as well. Source
On CBC's Hockey Night in Canada intermission program "The Hotstove", panelist Pierre LeBrun suggested that there might be some interest in Alexei Yashin. Yashin wrapped up the RSL season with his team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, where he scored 15 goals and 41 points in 54 games.

Bernier available, Canucks to sell?
According to The Province columnist Ed Willes, the Vancouver Canucks "would be better off selling rather than buying at the trade deadline." Willes believes that forwards Markus Naslund, Byron Ritchie, Matt Cooke and defenseman Aaron Miller could fetch a return. Source
The Edmonton Journal believes that San Jose Sharks forward Steve Bernier could be shopped to bring a defenseman at the trade deadline. Source
Scouts from three teams were at the Phoenix Coyotes-Dallas Stars game Monday night. The Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild and Florida Panthers were represented. Joe Nieuwendyk is serving as Florida's scout. Source

Hurricanes interested in Ryder?
It was reported on CJAD radio in Montreal that the Carolina Hurricanes are interested in Michael Ryder. During the Canadiens game, one of the Carolina scouts asked about Ryder. The rumor is that the Canes would send back Andrew Ladd and a draft pick.
On CKNW radio in Vancouver, Rick Quinton reported in his rumour round-up that the San Jose Sharks are shopping Steve Bernier. The Sharks have been in the rumor mill lately because they have been under-performing.

Montreal/San Jose rumours run wild
Various sources on the internet have confirmed of trade rumors of a Montreal Canadiens and San Jose Sharks blockbuster deal. A Montreal Gazette columnist is citing TSN's Bob McKenzie about a deal involving an exchange of Saku Koivu and Michael Ryder for Patrick Marleau and Steve Bernier. Other radio reports in Montreal suggest Joe Pavelski could be involved.
Other names that have been tossed around the rumour mill are Francis Bouillon, Jaroslav Halak and Kyle McLaren. Source
The Anaheim Ducks trade watch continues into day 8. A trade looks to be imminent according to the Ducks official NHL website. According to Marty York of Metro News, the Ducks have also come to a "verbal agreement" with UFA Teemu Selanne, and will likely return sometime after the new year. Source
