Salary cap to rise by $3 million?

The Toronto Star is reporting that the NHL salary cap will rise by about $3 million next season. Sources are saying the rising value of the Canadian dollar is one reason forwarded for an increase in revenues, but commissioner Gary Bettman has said merchandising revenue and ticket sales were up across the league. Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Adam Foote and GM Scott Howson met to discuss his future with the club. Howson wants to sign Foote to a multi-year contract extension, but if the Jackets fall out of playoff contention, he might be traded. The defenseman has a no-trade clause in his contract and any acceptable offer the Jackets received would have to be approved by Foote. “I have no intention of trading Adam Foote if we’re in a playoff race,” Howson said. “But I must do what is best for the franchise.” Source

The San Jose Sharks acquired defenceman J.D. Forrest from the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday for future considerations. Source

The Montreal Canadiens have signed free-agent forward Brock Trotter to a three-year contract. Terms of the deal were not released. Source
