NHL and Hockey Rumors for Mar 24, 2009

The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Jordan Eberle to a three-year, entry-level contract. Eberle was Edmonton's 1st round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed free agent defenseman Brian Connelly to a contract. The 22 year old has spent the past three seasons playing for Colorado College in the NCAA. Source

According to TSN, the Montreal Canadiens may be going up for sale. Owner George Gillett is believed to be seeking investors in all his assets, including the Habs. Gillett also has ownership in Liverpool Football Club and a team in Nascar. The Canadian Press is reporting that Research In Motion CEO Jim Balsillie is among the names being rumoured as the team's next owner. Others include billionaire Cirque du Soleil owner Guy Laliberte, media giant Quebecor and Rene Angelil, manager and husband of singer Celine Dion. Brochu's take: I don't think Canadiens fans have to worry about the team being moved. Can you imagine the Habs being owned by Celine Dion? Will they play "My Heart Will Go On" after every goal? Darren Dreger is also reporting that the Dallas Stars may also be seeking investors. Sources tell TSN, Stars owner Tom Hicks is willing to consider taking on minority investors, although at this point Hicks is not interested in selling the Stars. Brochu's take: I watch the English Premier League quite closely, and it's most likely that they want to sell Liverpool FC. The EPL is now the playground for the mega-rich, and even billionaires like Hicks and Gillett are being overshadowed by the multi-billionaires like Roman Abramovich and Lakshmi Mittal.
