NHL and Hockey Rumors for Feb 25, 2009

According to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, the Colorado Avalanche are close to a multi-player deal with an Eastern Conference team. The two rumored teams are the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins. Brochu's take: Could be interesting, as Avs GM Francois Giguere is under intense pressure from ownership to cut payroll to around $46 million. Source

According to Pierre LeBrun, there's a rumor that the Los Angeles Kings are interested in forward Ryan Smyth. He also believes that defenseman Scott Hannan and forward Darcy Tucker are also available. Brochu's take: I still don't think Smyth will be moved, and he has a no trade clause.

Matthew Sekeris of the Globe and Mail is reporting that his NHL sources are telling him that Atlanta Thrashers forward Marty Reasoner and New York Islanders forward Andy Hilbert are available, and at a much lower price than the marquee names on the market. Brochu's take: These players can make a big difference on a team, and they won't cost much.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed forward Mark Bell on re-entry waivers.

The St. Louis Blues have placed forward Yan Stastny on waivers.

I gotta agree with you on Smyth not moving. Unless they got a steal of a deal in return I can't see them letting him go. Not while his contract gets cheaper over the next few season at least.
