NHL and hockey rumors for Oct 17, 2008

The Chicago Blackhawks have fired head coach Denis Savard, and have replaced him with Joel Quenneville. Quenneville was hired earlier as a scout. Brochu's take: Firing a coach 4 games into the season is a surprise, but the firing of Savard is not. He was on a short leash with the new management, and Quenneville was always there to replace him.

The Chicago Daily Herald is reporting that the Hawks are interested in San Jose Sharks defenseman Kyle McLaren, but do not have the salary cap space to fit him in. McLaren is currently playing for San Jose's AHL affiliate. Source

According to Darren Dreger on the program "Leafs Lunch" on AM640, four NHL teams are interested in Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matt Stajan. The Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, New York Islanders and Washington Capitals are rumored to be interested in the young centre.
