Philly has more trades coming

A source in Philadelphia indicates that the firing of Ken Hitchcock and "resignation" of Bobby Clarke are just the beginning of major changes in the Flyers organization. New interim GM Paul Holmgren has kept talks with Jason Allison and he may be signed by next week. Several sources have also indicated that Robert Esche may be headed to Phoenix in exchange for Mike Comrie and Keith Yandle.

Amidst rumors of trades that would bring in different offensemen, I am compelled to say NOOOOOOOOO! It may be tempting because our offensive output has been poor, but we're actually ok on O personnel-wise...the way to fix things would be upgrading the DEFENSE with skilled offensive defensemen. This would not only improve our defense but would also help key the offense. Guys like Desjardins and Johnnson created quick transitions from defense to offense with their skill and mobility. That provided for a lot more offense than we're seeing now...The only guys we now have who can do what those guys did for us (consistently) are maybe Pitkanen, (but he's still a bit green, especially defensively) and Meyer...Meyer looked great in stretches last year but is struggling of late...Picard could grow into the role but it's a lot to ask of a rookie...I look forward to seeing what Lars Jonsson can do....but if we're going to make more trades or acquire FAs, what we could really use is a veteran offensive-defenseman back there...someone solid and proven, who can play D but also make quick transitions to offense, with the capability to bring it out himself and make a rush, or make an outlet pass to awaiting offensemen... someone who can shoot effectively from the point, QB the PP. etc. I don't know who is available...Brian Leetch is an idea as an interim solution...he's older but still has a good offensive game...he'd help patch a hole and can teach the likes of Picard, Jones, Pitkanen how to play the OD position effectively. I wouldn't pay him a large salary or make a long term committment to him. For the longer term though, we should look to acquire someone of Leetch's ilk who is at or coming into their prime...
