UFA rumours

Here are some of the latest rumours considering the top UFAs this year:

Chris Drury may sign with LA or Phoenix, if he is re-signed by the Sabres.

Danius Zubrus looks to be re-signing with the Capitals, but Montreal and Toronto have shown interest.

Todd Bertuzzi will definitely not be coming back to Detroit and will sign with an Eastern Conference team.

Sheldon Souray is all but done in Montreal. Edmonton is preparing a huge contract for him, possibly in the 4-5 year bracket.

Bertuzzi to Phoenix?

There are rumours around the league that Todd Bertuzzi may be headed to Phoenix. Wayne Gretzky is a big fan of the forward, and his friend Ed Jovanovski has been trying to persuade him to consider signing with the Coyotes. It is believed that Toronto, Montreal and Philadelphia are interested in signing the UFA.

A source in Atlanta has indicated that Ilya Kovalchuk could be used as tradebait at the entry draft.

Canucks after Shanahan?

According to several sources in Vancouver, GM Dave Nonis will be trying to sign Brendan Shanahan to a deal. Shanahan earned $4 million with the Rangers this year, and he is seeking a 2 or 3 year deal.

The Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals have shown interest in UFA Scott Gomez. It is believed he is seeking a $6.5 million year contract.

The frontrunners for the GM job in Phoenix are Neil Smith, Steve Tambellini and Doug MacLean.

Sheldon Souray, despite the rumours of him moving to the West, looks to be resigning with the Canadiens.

Washington willing to trade pick?

The Washington Capitals are willing to trade their first round choice in this year's draft to get some help up front to support Ovechkin and Semin. The Caps are also looking for a true powerplay quarterback, and are preparing a big contract for Sheldon Souray.

There are rumours from league sources that GM Doug MacLean could be fired this week.

The top candidates for the GM job in Phoenix are: Assistant GM Steve Tambellini of the Vancouver Canucks, Assistant GM Jim Nill of the Detroit Red Wings and Pat Quinn. Wayne Gretzky has agreed to stay on as coach.
