Rangers fire Renney, Tortorella steps in?
The New York Rangers have fired head coach Tom Renney. Rangers' assistant coach Parry Pearn was given his pink slip as well, however fellow assistant Mike Pelino was retained along with goalie coach Benoit Allaire. Sources say the New York Rangers and John Tortorella have an agreement in place that would make him the next head coach of the NHL team, but that the Tampa Bay Lightning have not yet granted him permission to do so. Brochu's take: Incidentally, all four teams that went to Europe this season have had all their head coaches fired. The European curse? There's been speculation that Renney's system and style started to grate on the players. As for Tortorella, he must have been sick of doing that TSN quiz show thing, and sitting next to James Duthie must have not been a pleasant experience. Source
