The Edmonton Oilers have signed goalie Nikolai Khabibulin to a 4-year, $15 million contract. Brochu's take: Very nice deal for the Oilers, who now have a solid no. 1 goalie.
The Calgary Flames have re-signed defenseman Adam Pardy.

Trade deadline wrap-up, Part 4

The Phoenix Coyotes traded goalie Mikael Tellqvist to the the Buffalo Sabres for a 4th round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenceman Andy Wozniewski from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for blueliner Danny Richmond.
The New York Islanders traded forward Bill Guerin to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional draft pick. The draft pick that Pittsburgh gives up will start as a fifth-round pick. If Pittsburgh makes the playoffs, it increases to a fourth-rounder. If they get to the second round, it becomes to a third round pick. Brochu's take: Finally! Guerin's saga is finally over today. It would seem that the Capitals had pulled out of the deal early on, and that's why it's dragged on.
Patrick O'Sullivan was originally shipped along with a second round draft pick in 2009 from the Los Angeles Kings to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Justin Williams. Brochu's take: This trade had been rumored late last night.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for Feb 22, 2009
It's Sunday, so it must be time for Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
"League sources" are saying that the Montreal Canadiens are interested in acquiring forward Ryan Smyth from the Colorado Avalanche. Avs GM Francois Giguere is shopping the forward, as well as several other players. Giguere has orders from ownership to slash payroll. Smyth has three years left on a $6.5 million a year deal, and also has a no trade clause. Brochu's take: No one is going to take Smyth at $6.5 million, and especially not for three more years! Smyth is a good forward but his value is not in his production. I really don't believe in all these Smyth rumours.
The Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning may be interested in Ottawa Senators defenseman Christoph Schubert. The Sens would like defenseman Ladislav Smid in return. Brochu's take: While both teams need defensemen desperately, there are better options for Schubert. As for Smid, I think he's worth more than Schubert, Bruce.
The Atlanta Thrashers have been shopping defensemen Ron Hainsey and Niclas Havelid. Both are expected to be dealt at the deadline. Brochu's take: Havelid, yes. Hainsey, no.

NHL and Hockey Rumors for Feb 19, 2009
According to Sportsnet and TSN, Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Kovalev will return to the Habs this weekend. Kovalev denied a Russian report that he blamed Montreal's recent struggles on the habits of some of the younger players on the team. La Presse also reported that GM Bob Gainey has shopped Kovalev around the NHL for the past two weeks. Brochu's take: Kovalev's value is at an all time low right now, so Gainey's smart enough to know he won't trade him. After Kovalev returns from Exile Island, I think he will be a much better player.
The Forecaster on CBC is reporting that defenseman Jay McKee is unhappy with his current situation with the St. Louis Blues and would like to move on. It's possible that the Blues would send McKee to the minors and call him up on re-entry waivers. Brochu's take: McKee's $4 million salary this year and next appears to be the big stumbling block. This sounds more like a scenario where you trade a bad contract for another bad contract.
The Forecaster report is also saying that the Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers would also love to Edmonton Oilers forward Erik Cole for the stretch run. Brochu's take: Suddenly, Cole's price goes up. But I would imagine the Oilers holding on to him, unless they get blown away by a package. Source

The twins are seeking five-year deals that average $6.5-million a year. The Canucks have countered with $5.5-million over three or four years. The Canucks are also talking contract with impending UFA Alex Burrows, and the rumor is that the deal could be in the three to five year range, averaging $2 million a season. Brochu's take: Statistically, the Sedins are worth around $6 million each. However, GM Mike Gillis might want to see what they will do in the stretch and the playoffs before he commits that much salary cap space to two players. As for Burrows, that is a decent number for a player of his calibre, especially considering his humble roots in the ECHL. Source

The Boston Herald is reporting that Edmonton Oilers forward Erik Cole is, according to "one NHL source", is telling his friends that he expects to be a Boston Bruin soon. Most speculation focused on Vladimir Sobotka and defenseman Matt Lashoff as trade bait for the impending unrestricted free agent. Brochu's take: The Oilers are still fighting for a playoff spot, so it would be odd if they traded Cole now. Source

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenseman Staffan Kronwall on re-entry waivers.
According to TSN, Tomas Kaberle and his agent may be preparing a list of teams that he is willing to be traded to. Also, it's possible that the Leafs could shop both forwards Mikhail Grabovski and Dominic Moore if they don't get them signed. Brochu's take: Grabovski will be signed, but it's unknown if Moore and his family history will have any impact on Burke's decision.
The two Ottawa Senators most likely to be traded at the deadline appear to be defenseman Filip Kuba and forward Chris Neil, who are both due to be unrestricted free agents this summer.

Tampa Bay Lighting general manager Brian Lawton is denying talk that Vincent Lecavalier is going to be dealt Monday to the Edmonton Oilers for a large package of players and draft picks. Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reported that the rumoured deal would have sent Lecavalier to Edmonton for three players, two prospects, two No. 1 picks and a third-rounder. "It's just a pipe dream that people think we're going to trade him," Lawton said. Brochu's take: Actually, in Garrioch's article, he describes how Lawton denies the deal. So in essence, Lawton had to deny the denial! I'm sure Lawton is happy he had to get out of bed to put the fire out on this one. Source

It appears that Koules wants Lecavalier to stay, while Barrie is telling GM Brian Lawton to see what he can get in return. Brochu's take: Al Strachan on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada intermission program "The Hotstove" also added that the deal seems to be stalling because the Montreal Canadiens don't want to give up defenseman Andrei Markov. Pierre Lebrun also stated that Montreal would be Vinny's top destination IF he was asked to provide a list of teams he would like to be traded to. Adds more fuel to the fire.

Pitkanen traded for Cole, more signings
The Edmonton Oilers have traded restricted free agent Joni Pitkanen to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Erik Cole. Brochu's take: This is one of those rare trades that have been rumored for quite some time and has actually taken place. Pitkanen gets a third chance to prove himself while Cole should take Torres' place on the top six of the Oilers' forwards.
The Chicago Blackhawks have traded restricted free agent forward Rene Bourque to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a future second round pick.
The Anaheim Ducks have officially re-signed restricted free agent forward Corey Perry to a 5 year, $26.625 million contract extension.

Rumors from the NHL Entry draft
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Carolina Hurricanes are very interested in Vancouver Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa and may be willing to dangle Erik Cole, Justin Williams or Tuomo Ruutu to get him. They still remain interested in Edmonton Oilers defenseman Joni Pitkanen.
Bob McKenzie of TSN is reporting that the San Jose Sharks have given permission to several Eastern Conference teams to speak to impending UFA Brian Campbell.
The Ottawa Senators signed center Chris Kelly to a four-year, $8.5 million deal Saturday.

NHL and hockey rumors for June 18, 2008
According to TSN's Darren Dreger, three teams could be heavily involved in trade discussions this week. The Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and San Jose Sharks are poised to make significant changes to their team as the NHL Entry draft approaches this Friday. Source
Apparently, there were rumors that Patrick Marleau was about to be sent to the Vancouver Canucks in a package that would include Ryan Kesler. Jonathan Cheechoo is also available.
Olli Jokinen remains available, and there's some speculation that it could be a straight swap with Marleau.
Dreger also reports that the Hurricanes are looking for a defenseman and maybe targeting Edmonton Oilers blueliner Joni Pitkanen. Erik Cole, Justin Williams and Tuomo Ruutu are are being shopped in return.

The Edmonton Journal is reporting that the New York Rangers could be interested in restricted free agent Joni Pitkanen. Jim Matheson also suggests that the Carolina Hurricanes could be a better trade partner if they package Erik Cole and a draft pick.
