NHL and Hockey Rumors for Jan 17, 2009

According to Sportsnet's Mike Brophy on Hockeycentral, the Anaheim Ducks are not actively shopping Chris Pronger, but they are listening to all offers for him. Brophy speculates that the Los Angeles Kings and Florida Panthers are interested, but it's unlikely the Ducks will trade Pronger to a divisional rival. Brophy also suggests that there could a be swap for Jay Bouwmeester. Brochu's take: I agree with Brophy that he won't be traded to a divisional rival, although it has happened before (think Alex Tanguay). I don't think Florida is interested in adding such a big salary right now.

ESPN's Scott Burnside reported Florida Panthers GM Jacques Martin was on hand for Wednesday's Washington Capitals-Pittsburgh Penguins game and wondered if he were scouting the two teams as potential trade partners for defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, whom Martin might move by the trade deadline if he's unable to re-sign him. Brochu's take: Even if the Panthers make the playoffs, it's unlikely they will go far, and Bouwmeester has shown no indication that he wants to stay in Florida. The Cats are better off trading him before the deadline or they'll end up losing him for nothing in the summer. Source
